Donald Super's Influence in the United Kingdom

The impact of Donald Super's work on the theory and practice of career guidance in the UK is reviewed. He played an important role in the move away from a ``talent-matching' to a developmental model, and in the emergence of the concept of careers education. He also made significant direct contributions to the field during the three years he spent in England towards the end of his own career. The critique to which his work was subjected led to innovative theoretical work which stands in its own right. While in some respects his legacy was more indirect than direct, it is still evident.

This interview with Donald Super focuses on life stages, determinants, role of career counselors, matching vs. developmental emphasis, multicultural and women's issues, current applications of theory, and a comment on future directions.This interview was videotaped at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in April, 1991. It has been edited for clarity and ease of reading.     

Perspectives on Donald Super's Construct of Career Maturity

The evolution of Donald Super's construct of Career Maturity (CM) is traced from the Career Pattern Study of the 1950s to the innovative research of the Work Importance Study in the 1980s. Successful attempts to establish the portability of the CM construct across countries, particularly in Canada and Australia, are described. An overview of instruments derived from Super's theories about career development and maturity is presented, together with an overview of research on the correlates of CM. Reference is made to implications of changes over time in the nature of work and the nature of careers for Super's theories. As others have recognised, evolving changes in these areas mean that theories, to remain relevant, also need to evolve. The article includes discussion of some of the dimensions identified more recently as useful in explaining career development levels and patterns, including career indecision and work role salience.     

Donald J. Trump and the rhetoric of ressentiment

ABSTRACT

This essay contributes to and reframes the preliminary scholarly assessments of President Donald J. Trump's appeals to rage, malice, and revenge by sketching the rhetorical dimensions of an underlying emotional-moral framework in which victimization, resentment, and revenge are inverted civic virtues. I elaborate on the concept of ressentiment (re-sentiment), a condition in which a subject is addled by rage and envy yet remains impotent, subjugated and unable to act on or adequately express frustration. Though anger and resentment capture part of Trump's affective register, I suggest that ressentiment accounts for the unique intersection where powerful sentiments and self-serving morality are coupled with feelings of powerlessness and ruminations on past injuries. Thus, shifting focus from the rhetoric of resentment to that of ressentiment explains how Trump is able to sustain the affective charge of animus without forfeiting the moral high ground of victimhood to his audience's “oppressors”—Democrats, the press, criminals, immigrants, foreign adversaries, welfare recipients, the Me Too movement, “globalists,” and racial Others.     

Donald Super's Contribution to Career Guidance and Counselling in Japan

Dr Donald Super's contributions to career guidance and counselling in Japan are summarised within the framework of his career development theory from 1960 to 1990. The first part is related to the theoretical frame of reference of career guidance in the secondary school. The second is focused on developing a theoretical and practical basis for career counselling for the adult population. It is concluded that the importance of his approach has increased in the changing Japanese society.

Super, the man, reflecting many years of professional contact and personal friendship, provide a background for a brief summary of two dimensions of his theory regarded by the writer as major influences on the field of career development: the Life Career Rainbow and the Archway of Career Determinants. One highlight of his international impact is noted. Observations are made about two aspects of Super's formulation that he may have considered ``unfinished business'.
