The Profession of College Career Services Delivery: What College Counselors Should Know About Career Centers

College career centers provide a valuable resource to students faced with choosing a major, learning about different career fields, and securing internships and jobs. Career centers must provide an increasingly sophisticated array of one-on-one and virtual services in order to meet the needs of students and recruiters. Collaborations between the career services office and other departments, including the college counseling center, are necessary to address students' needs in a holistic manner. The author describes the organizational structure of college career centers and services typically offered, discusses psychological correlates of career development and the integration of personal and career counseling, and provides suggestions for how counseling center and other college professionals can collaborate with their career services office.     

Cognitive Effects of College: Differences Between African American and Caucasian Students

In this longitudinal study of African American and Caucasian students from eighteen 4-year institutions, objective tests were used to estimate the cognitive effects of race in college, while applying statistical controls for an extensive set of confounding influences including precollege and background traits, institutional characteristics, and academic and social experiences. Evidence from the study suggests that in the first 3 years of college Caucasian students scored higher than their African American counterparts on seven standardized tests measuring critical thinking skills, knowledge of mathematics, reading comprehension, science reasoning, and writing skills. Implications for future research are discussed.     

Statistics Anxiety Among Female African American Graduate-Level Social Work Students

ABSTRACT

Studies have found that statistics anxiety among female and minority graduate students is higher than that of their Caucasian counterparts. Both gender and culturally sensitive approaches to teaching statistics need to be developed to reduce student anxiety, especially in graduate programs that are dominated by women and minorities. The current study presents data on pre- and post-course statistics among female African American MSW students enrolled in a gender and culturally sensitive statistics course. A series of t-tests revealed that students had significantly lower levels of anxiety about statistics after the course. Implications for integrating gender and culturally sensitive approaches into the curriculum are discussed, and recommendations for future research are provided.     

African American College Students,the Black Church,and Counseling

African American undergraduate students face numerous challenges during college; however, they are less likely to seek help from college counseling services. Often, African Americans seek support from spiritual resources. In the current phenomenological study, participants shared in a focus group interview. Overall, participants seemed to value the Black Church as an integral part of their lives and as an influence on their perceptions of counseling and proclivity to seek counseling services.     

Using African American Narratives to Analyze Social Policy

Abstract

This paper explores how African American literature can enrich the analysis of social policy in social work graduate courses. The historic debate between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Du Bois about black progress, and its reflection in subsequent works by Richard Wright, Ralph Ellison, Shelby Steele, and Cornel West, illustrate that the debate remains present in contemporary affirmative action and welfare reform policies. Using ethnic narratives can expand adult students' ability to analyze the purposes, consequences, and values underlying social policies and help social workers formulate, document and buttress new policy positions. Such abilities are especially critical for social policies in which race remains a critical influence.     

浅析职业院校中职业生涯发展教育

在当前就业形势十分严峻的环境下,职业院校开展职业生涯发展教育是十分必要的,符合时代要求,有利于学生的终身学习和素质教育。但目前,开展职业生涯发展教育还存在着针对性不强、实践性不够、教育不完整、缺乏专业教师等问题,故此,提出相应的对策予以解决。     

对当前大学就业指导与生涯辅导的思考

大学生就业制度的变革,以及高校职业教育的薄弱,使大学生就业问题渐渐成为一种集体的困惑,甚至是危机,阻碍着也推动着我国高等教育的改革。要实现大学生与社会的有效对接,笔者认为,应重视高校职业教育功能,增强大学生职业意识和生涯规划,实现大学生就业指导工作向生涯发展辅导模式的转变,着力培养大学生的学习能力和未来发展潜力。     

团体心理辅导对提高女大学生职业决策自我效能的有效性研究

为探讨团体心理辅导对女大学生职业决策自我效能的影响,选取湖南女子大学56名大一女生为被试（实验组与对照组各28人）,对实验组进行为期8周的团体心理辅导,对照组则处于常态。用职业决策自我效能量表（CDMSE）和焦虑自评量表（SAS）在干预前后进行评估。结果为：干预前,两组CDMSE、SAS评分差异不显著。干预后,CDMSE评分上,实验组＂自我评价＂、＂选择目标＂、＂制订规划＂三个维度得分高于对照组;SAS评分上,实验组低于对照组。研究表明：职业生涯团体心理辅导可以有效地提高女大学生的职业决策自我效能水平,降低焦虑程度。     

高职生职业生涯规划的思考

高职生职业生涯规划是指学生在大学期间进行系统的职业发展道路的设想和规划。大学时期是人一生中的重要阶段,学生应好好度过,并在教师指导的基础上认真规划自身的职业生涯,做好四个＂三＂,即认识人生三种关系,树立人生三个支点,把握个人发展的＂三级跳＂,构建三方面结构。     

试论高校辅导员职业发展

高校肩负着把大学生培养成为"合格建设者"和"可靠接班人的重任",而辅导员担负着大学生思想政治教育的主要任务,奋战在思想政治教育的第一线,其作用不可或缺、不可替代,关系到国家和高校教育目标的实现。当下,高校辅导员职业发展遭遇瓶颈,面临诸多挑战和发展困境。辅导员职业发展,应促进高校辅导员职业发展的职业化、专业化、专家化为目标,国家、高校以及辅导员三者互动,共同努力,以满足辅导员的职业发展需求。     

African American student sociocultural adjustment to Thai international higher education

ABSTRACT

This article aims to detail an exploratory study involving African American student experiences in a Thai international programme. This study employed a qualitative case study to explore the adjustment process of African American international students in Thailand. The participants included 15 African American students who were selected through a snowball sampling technique in 2014–2016. The data were collected through semi-structured one on one interviews and analysed through content analysis. The participants reported adjustment difficulties related to their sense of isolation in Thailand, the excessive attention received from their hosts, the appropriate response to said attention, Thai culture and adjustment to academic differences. An analysis of the source of stress, anxiety and conflict among the participants is intended to provide insight into international recruitment practices and facilitating more progressive pre-departure orientation sessions among impending international students.     

Relationship Between Psychosocial Factors and Academic Achievement Among African American Students

Abstract

The authors of this cross-sectional study used surveys based on the noncognitive model of W. E. Sedlacek and C. G. Brooks (1976) to determine psychosocial factors associated with African American students' high school achievement Psychosocial variables explored included community service, academic motivation, social support, and students' methods of handling unfair treatment. Results showed that after gender and absenteeism were controlled for, only the method of handling unfair treatment was positively associated with grade point average (GPA), p < .05. Those findings suggest that students who talk to others about being treated unfairly instead of keeping it to themselves are more likely to have higher GPAs; the findings also have important implications for individuals involved in the counseling and education of high school students. Sedlacek and Brooks's model provides an effective guide for predicting academic achievement and for developing programs to improve academic achievement among students of color. Further research is needed into psychosocial factors and their effects on academic achievement.

目前我国大学生就业难已成为不争的事实,从大学生角度应对就业难问题,就要培养大学生自身的职业生涯可持续发展能力。文章分析了大学生职业生涯可持续发展能力的内涵和结构维度,依据不同层次和类别高校的优势和特色,从机制、理念、能力、质量四个方面,总结出高校培养大学生职业生涯可持续发展能力的共同路径,并分类探讨了学术型大学和职业型大学的特色路径。

免费师范生的职业生涯规划对其今后的职业发展有着重要的意义,免费师范生具有自身的特殊性,如何对免费师范生开展有效的职业生涯规划辅导,增进其对教师的职业认同感,成为高校辅导员的重要职责;而高校辅导员在这方面具有自身的优势,有利于加强对免费师范生的职业生涯规划辅导。     

Pedagogies of experience: a case of the African American male teacher

Numerous scholars have illustrated how African American teachers’ past experiences provide them a philosophical vision committed to teaching for social and educational change for African American students. This article draws from this body of work by looking at the diverse ways five African American male teachers used their past experiences to shape their vision for working with African American male students. However, this article also extends this body of work by illustrating that while the teachers in this study had similar commitments to working with African American males, their varied life experiences and social locations provided them different sources of practical and philosophical knowledge. These findings illustrate the diversity of experiences these teachers drew from, thus troubling the common sense discourses that essentialize African American male teachers as one-dimensional monolithic role models.     

对大学生职业生涯教育的几点思考

大学生职业生涯教育是时代发展的需要,是大学生成才的内在需要,开展职业生涯教育有利于引导大学生合理规划职业生涯,是大学教育中的重要内容。高校应该把职业生涯规划教育作为大学教育的重要环节,建立起全程化、全员化的课程教育体系,多层次、全方位的评价体系和集教学、科研、咨询为一体的专业教师队伍,从而引导大学生做好职业生涯规划。     

The more things change,the more they stay the same: African American English,language policy,and African American learners

Abstract

Despite the substantive body of research on African American Language (AAL), designating it a meaningful, rule-governed language system and the first language of many African Americans, schools in the US have systematically failed to integrate a language policy related to African American English learners (AAELs). In this article, we employ a critical discourse and policy analysis to examine two major policies related to AAL and AAELs – the Martin Luther King Junior Elementary School Children et al. v. Ann Arbor School District, a federal district case in Michigan known as the Ann Arbor Decision, and the Ebonics Resolution adopted by the Oakland California Board of the Oakland Unified School District (OUSD). Our analysis reveals three themes across these texts – they affirm AAL as a ‘home and community language’ in its own right, mandate teachers to take ‘appropriate action’ in teaching AAL speakers, and dispel notions that AAL stems from cultural, social, and economic deprivation.     

对开展大学生生涯辅导的思考

我国大学生生涯辅导起步较晚,多数高校以就业指导为主,尚未形成系统的生涯辅导体系。笔者认为应采用四个结合:第一课堂与第二课堂、全程性与阶段性、团体辅导与个体辅导、专兼职相结合,提高生涯辅导的实效性。

伴随着社会经济环境恶化与高等教育大众化的影响,大学生就业问题向高等教育提出了新的任务和挑战。结合高校素质教育的基本特征,分析素质教育在大学生能力素质结构的全面完善、职业发展的扩展与延伸、职业创新能力形成、主体性因素体现中发挥的作用。强化高校素质教育是促进大学生就业与职业发展的重要举措。
