A collective approach towards enhancing undergraduate engineering education

In this paper, we analyse a collective approach towards enhancing undergraduate Engineering Education. All the authors, both engineers and faculty developers, have, at some point in this collaboration, been involved in the vision, development or implementation. Our desire is to demonstrate the incremental nature of the process as well as evidence of impact.     

浅析历史专业本科毕业论文存在的问题

学位论文是衡量高校教学质量的重要内容,但目前历史专业本科毕业论文中普遍存在选题大而空、行文不规范、抄袭严重、缺乏史料考证环节等问题,其成因既有教育制度和课程设置不完善、浮躁社会风气的影响等客观因素,也有学风和师生对毕业论文不够重视等主观因素。解决此问题的对策要从师生共同重视学风建设和强化毕业论文的撰写等环节入手。

Adaptive research supervision: exploring expert thesis supervisors' practical knowledge

Several researchers have suggested the importance of being responsive to students' needs in research supervision. Adapting support strategies to students' needs in light of the goals of a task is referred to as adaptivity. In the present study, the practice of adaptivity is explored by interviewing expert thesis supervisors about diagnosing student characteristics in order to determine students' needs and concurrent adaptive support strategies. The findings suggest that next to competence, supervisors also diagnose elements of students' determination and context. With respect to support strategies, it is suggested that supervisors adapt to student needs in terms of explicating standards, quality or consequences, division of responsibilities, providing more/less critical feedback and sympathising. The complexity of the relationship between diagnosing student characteristics and adapting support strategies is illustrated and needs further study.

Local Spirit,Global Knowledge: A Japanese approach to knowledge development in international cooperation

Japan has emerged as a leading player in international aid but has often been seen as being rather peripheral to the major debates about development and aid. This paper seeks to examine the distinct contribution Japan can make to these debates. To develop such an argument it is necessary to look into Japan's own history of development and aid receipt. It is also important to understand the crucial role played by Japanese cultural values and, particularly, the central importance of a Japanese tradition of understanding knowledge that is very different from those of other aid-providing countries.     

A minimally invasive approach to undergraduate anatomy teaching

Anatomy is one of the cornerstones of medical education. Unfortunately, sufficient evidence has accumulated to suggest a worldwide decline in the resources and time allocated to its teaching. Integration of anatomy with clinical medicine has been frequently advocated as the solution to this academic crisis. Consequently, new ways of harnessing clinical relevance to the teaching of anatomy must be sought to make it applicable to contemporary clinical practice. Human cadavers have been used to teach laparoscopic skills to surgical trainees for some time. More recently, centers in the United States have piloted the use of minimally invasive techniques in the teaching of anatomy to undergraduates. We believe that the use of laparoscopy on human cadavers may also be used to complement the teaching of anatomy to United Kingdom and European medical students. This would not only familiarize students with the topography and morphology of human anatomy, but also with the concept of manipulating anatomical structures to achieve a clinical outcome. Other benefits include improved three‐dimensional orientation, increased dexterity, and development team‐working skills amongst students. A UK feasibility study is currently underway. 通过网络对本科毕业论文(设计)进行了检索比对,指出“文献引用不规范”等5种情况是造成重复率高(抄袭)的主要原因.在不考虑学生诚信等主观因素的前提下,分析指出教学资源不足和教学管理不完善是造成重复率高(抄袭)的客观原因,并提出了解决问题的针对性方案.     

Teachers' knowledge work in collective practice development: Approaches to introducing assessment for learning at the school level

Collective approaches to practice development are increasingly common in the teaching profession. Such initiatives frequently involve groups of teachers taking responsibility for introducing, sharing and developing new pedagogical resources and for aiding their integration into existing practices. This article explores teachers’ knowledge work as a component of collective practice development, and investigates how engagement with knowledge is constructed in different school environments. Drawing on research that followed an Assessment for Learning (AfL) project in a Norwegian city, the article examines how two groups of lower secondary teachers worked to support the introduction and development of AfL resources at their respective schools. The analysis reveals how their knowledge work was framed in different ways through available organisational roles and resources, and discusses the implications for initiatives aimed at collective practice development at the school level.

End-user bibliographic instruction: A new approach to retrieving knowledge

The opportunity for library users to design and execute their own database searches through direct access to computerized data sources is known as end-user searching. Due to the proliferation of microcomputers and changes in software design, the phenomenon is gaining widespread support among libraries across the country. This paper describes three methods of education and training-course-integrated, classroombased and self-service. The role of the librarian is identified in each.She also serves as the Coordinator of End-User Instruction for the library.     

提高认识、强化管理,进一步提升化学专业本科毕业论文质量

本科毕业论文质量关系着高等学校的人才培养质量和学生的专业综合素质水平,也是衡量教学管理水平的重要依据.本文从商丘师范学院化学专业本科毕业论文的现状及在具体实施环节中存在的主要问题入手,结合本专业自身特点,探讨了进一步提高本专业毕业论文整体质量与学术水平的若干有效措施.     

A comparison of undergraduate major and technical knowledge of post-baccalaureate teacher candidates

Abstract

This article focuses on the impact of student undergraduate major (Agricultural Education or other majors) on the technical agricultural knowledge of preservice teachers as measured by a standardized performance test and as perceived by cooperating teachers. Subjects of the study (N=130) had completed the post-baccalaureate teacher credential (certification) program at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, California. Animal Science and Agricultural Education majors scored significantly lower on the Plant and Soil Science section of the performance test than did students holding undergraduate degrees in other areas. Differences were also found between major and student teacher knowledge as perceived by cooperating teachers. These findings reveal that there were discrepancies between knowledge as measured by these two evaluative methods. As a result, it was recommended that both evaluation methods examined in this study be continued in an effort to provide essential information on program quality to stakeholders.
