The term, culture shock, was introduced for the first time in 1958 to describe the anxiety produced when a person moves to a completely new environ- ment. This term expresses the lack of direction, the feeling of not knowing what to do or how to do things in a new environment, and not knowing what is appro- priate or inappropriate. The feeling of culture shock generally sets in after the first few weeks of coming to a new place. "Coming to America is like jumping into cold water," says an inte… 相似文献

The Functional Linguistics provides a new perspective for the study of language in the present time.It regards language as a semiotic system. It also interprets language as a network of meaning potential. It accounts for what one can do linguistically and provides the set of linguistic choices. What the speaker do is the realization of these choices and certain meanings then are expressed. This present paper has conducted a discourse study of humors. The theoretical framework of humor analysis in this paper is systemic-functional linguistics, especially the theory of context. 相似文献

This is a story which tells that there was a rich man who wished to do something for people. First he decided to find out whether they deserved his help. So he placed a very large stone in the center of a village, and hid nearby to see what would happen. One man came and complained1 about the stone in the road, but did not do anything. 相似文献

I do know that birds continue to live and procreate as long as the weather is amenable and the food there's if it were a deal between them, the weather and the crops. No questions asked. And the birds are in earnest about it,as I am in earnest about finding a reason for their lives, for what reason I myself do not understand. So I too,in my 相似文献

Drinking tea is a main part of the English people's life. In the morning, husband or wife, still in bed, may get a cup of tea brought by others before getting up. For hotel guests, the first thing they do after they wake up in the morning is to drink tea. Even in small inns, electric teapots are prepared for the customers. 相似文献

Grammar is often misunderstood in the language teaching field. The misconception lies in the view that grammar is a collection of arbitrary rules about static structures in the language. Further questionable claims are that the structures do not have to be taught, learners will acquire them on their own, 相似文献

Is grammar a thing or is it something that happens? This paper will argue that maybe it is a bit of both. When we describe language, as in the grammar of English, grammar is more noun-like than verb-like. It is a body of facts about the language: "The present perfect is formed by the auxiliary have plus the past participle", etc. On the other hand, when we use language in real communication, grammar manifests itself in ways that seem to have little to do with the conscious appli 相似文献

The translation practice is not only a change of language but also a change of culture. The"cultural default"is derived from the cultural differences between the SL (Source Language) and TL (Target Language), is a very troublesome thing for the translators. When there appears the phenomenon of cultural default, it is necessary to compensate for it, in this way, adding gloss translation is a very good way to do it , especially in the literary translation. This essay will discuss the phenomenon of"cultural default"and advantage of adding gloss translation in literary translation. 相似文献

However mean your life is, meet it and live it; do not shun it and call it hard names. It is not so bad as you are. It looks poorest when you are richest. The fault-finder will find faults in paradise. Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poor-house. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the alms-house as brightly as from the rich man' s abode; the snow melts before its door as early in the spring. I do not see but a quiet mind may live as contentedly there, and have as cheering thoughts, as in 相似文献
