Numerical Calculation of Concrete Slab Response to Blast Loading

In the present paper, a dynamic plastic damage model for concrete has been employed to estimate responses of a reinforced concrete slab subjected to blast loading. The interaction between the blast wave and the concrete slab is considered in 3D simulation. In the first stage, the initial detonation and blast wave propagation is modelled in 2D simulation before the blast wave reaches the concrete slab, then the results obtained from 2D calculation are remapped to a 3D model. The calculated blast load is compared with that obtained from TM5-1300. Numerical results of the concrete slab response are compared with the explosive test carried out- in the Weapons System Division, Defence Science and Technology Organisation, Department of Defence, Australia.

After the progressive collapse of Ronan Point apartment in UK in 1968, intensive research effort had been spent on developing guidelines for design of new or strengthening the existing structures to prevent progressive collapse. However, only very few building design codes provide some rather general guidance, no detailed design requirement is given. Progressive collapse of the Alfred P. Murrah Federal building in Oklahoma City and the World Trade Centre （WTC） sparked again tremendous research interest on progressive collapse of structures. Recently, US Department of Defence （DoD） and US General Service Administration （GSA） issued guidelines for structure progressive collapse analysis. These two guidelines are most commonly used, but their accuracy is not known. This paper presents numerical analysis of progressive collapse of an example frame structure to blast loads. The DoD and GSA procedures are also used to analyse the same example structure. Numerical results are compared and discussed. The accuracy and the applicability of the two design guidelines are evaluated.

Construction of an ultra-deep diaphragm wall: a case study

This paper presents a case study on an ultra-deep diaphragm wall with a depth of 110 m constructed in Ningbo City. The in-situ application shows that using Bauer BC40 cutter machine in conjunction with cutter wheels specified for different strata would be qualified for constructing the 110 m diaphragm wall with high efficiency and precision given that the quality of slurry and poured concrete can be guaranteed. The ground settlement can be effectively controlled by using the overlapping construction method. Sliding failure as a whole characterized by pronounced lateral deformation is likely to occur in the upper muddy clay layer due to its high compressibility and sensitivity. In contrast, local collapse of trench walls tends to happen in the sandy silt strata. Furthermore, careful attention should be paid to sandy silt during the entire construction period as the vertical displacement of the sandy silt continues to develop even after concrete pouring

Parametric optimization of organic Rankine cycle with R245fa/R601a as working fluid

In order to select the appropriate working fluids and optimize parameters for medium-temperature geothermally-powered organic Rankine cycle(ORC), R245 fa is mixed with R601 a at geothermal water temperature of 110 ℃. Based on thermodynamics, the characteristics of mixture and its influence on the performance of ORC under different evaporating temperatures and composition proportions are analyzed. Results show that the zeotropic mixture R245fa/R601a(0.4/0.6) has the highest performance. When the evaporating temperature reaches 67 ℃, the outlet temperature of geothermal water is 61 ℃, the net power output is the highest and the thermal efficiency is about 9%.     

Synthesis of a novel UV-curable prepolymer neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether diacrylate and its cured film tensile property

A novel UV-curable prepolymer neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether diacrylate(NPGGEA)was synthesized by using neopentyl glycol diglycidyl ether(NPGGE)and acrylic acid(AA)as starting materials, N, N-dimethylbenzylamine as catalyst and p-hydroxyanisole as inhibitor. The optimum synthetic conditions were taken as follows: The concentration of N,N-dimethylbenzylamine, 0.80% of reactants; the concentration of p-hydroxyanisole, 0.3% of reactants; the reaction temperature, 90-110℃; the molar ratio of NPGGE to AA, 1:2.2. Meanwhile, 1-hydroxycyclohexyl phenyl ketone of a UV-cured initiator was added to the synthesized NPGGEA to prepare a kind of UV-cured coating. Mechanical properties of the UV-cured films were determined, giving 28.75 MPa of tensile strength, 923.82 MPa of Young‘s modulus and 5.51% of elongation at tear.
