高等教育研究的社会责任是一个重要的时代命题。基于高等教育在经济社会中的重要作用以及问责制的影响,高等教育研究应负起社会责任。为制定和宣传政策服务、探寻实践中介和直接服务实践以及研究、应用理论对高等教育的发展及其挑战及时提出预测、预警是高等教育研究应承担的具体社会责任。研究者要不断学习,提升理论修养,这是承担社会责任的基础。研究者要加强自律,学术共同体也要对研究者实施他律,如此研究者履行好社会责任才能落到实处。

当前世界范围内,高等教育系统的多样化、分散化和复杂化发展趋势带来高等教育阶段学习相互衔接及治理的难题。出于对包容、公平和优质的终身学习体系的追求,联合国教科文组织启动了关于建立高等教育弹性学习路径的跨国研究项目。文章基于联合国教科文组织的项目实践,分析相关国家高等教育系统建立弹性学习路径的政策与实践。在政策领域,各国政府普遍通过制定一套综合性的高等教育国家政策框架,配以国家资历框架、质量保证以及资助机制等支持性的高等教育治理政策工具,推动弹性学习路径的实施。在实践领域,各国高等教育机构发挥主动性,如通过提供多元化的入学途径、促进高等教育系统的衔接和创新高等教育提供模式来推进弹性学习路径的实施。在中国高等教育普及化深入发展的新的背景下,国际社会有关高等教育弹性学习路径的政策与实践为中国高等教育的改革与终身学习的推进提供了可资借鉴的经验。     

反思在“服务学习”中的应用及启示

服务学习近十年来在美国发展迅猛,成效颇丰。反思是服务学习中的一个重要环节,它贯穿于服务学习的始终。它的实施促进了服务学习目标的达成,有利于参与者在学术课程学习、个人发展和公民意识及责任感形成等方面的发展,也对我国社区服务与社会实践的实施有一定的启示。

服务学习有着将社区服务与学术课程结合起来的课程与教学取向.这一取向历久弥新,成为当今世界最主要的课程改革追求之一.服务学习最主要的特征包括:明确而真实的学习目标、适应真实的社区需要、儿童做决定以及分析性反思.时至今日,服务学习已经历三个历史时期,发展到制度化阶段.服务学习对学生的学术性学习成绩的提高、个性及社会性发展、公民责任感与职业意识的加强均有显著、积极的影响.而服务学习价值的体现,依赖于其高质量和创造性的实施.探讨服务学习对完善我国方兴未艾的"社区服务和社会实践"乃至整个综合实践活动课程具有不可替代的作用.     

Engaging Criminal Justice Students through Service Learning

The increasing popularity of service learning has led to the implementation of the pedagogy across educational levels and disciplines. Evidence of its utilization in criminal justice education spans two decades, most of which include case studies of service-learning courses or projects. These examples of service-learning implementation seem to serve as a best practices guide for other faculty and researchers interested in adopting the pedagogy. By examining responses to offender populations and policy areas by students (n = 37) involved in a service-learning course, the current research adds to this “best practices” approach and is intended to instigate further examination of the benefits of service learning for criminal justice students and the discipline.

SERVICE LEARNING AND OLDER ADULTS

Youth and older adults are the most valuable sources of community volunteerism in the United States today. An important part of involving youth in service to others has been the proliferation and sophistication of service-learning programs that provide opportunities for meaningful engagement and reflection. Increasingly, service learning is recognized as an integral part of both community involvement and education, and youth are provided with growing opportunities to combine practice and knowledge. As this movement has developed, however, older adult volunteers have been largely excluded. Despite theory and observation that demonstrates older adults' desire to stay engaged in learning and service, programs providing them with structured opportunities are rare. After outlining the development and expansion of service-learning programs for youth in the United States, this paper asks the question, ''Why not service learning for elders?'' analyzes some of the potential benefits of institutionalizing such an approach, and highlights promising efforts in the field.     

Measuring Social Capital as an Outcome of Service Learning

Service-learning has been put forth as one of the proposed solutions to increasing social capital. However, service-learning research has not significantly addressed the impact of service learning on social capital. Unlike most previous studies, this research used quantitative analysis to measure the effect of university service-learning programs on social capital by examining the question: What impact do service-learning programs have on social capital post-graduation? This study showed that service learning addresses the civic engagement problem by providing evidence suggesting that service learning predicts social capital post-graduation.     

Justice-Learning: Service-Learning as Justice-Oriented Education

“Justice-learning” lies at the intersection of service-learning and social justice education. Specifically, I argue for a distinctive form of community-based learning (“antifoundational service-learning”) that fosters a justice-oriented framework (“anti-anti-social justice”) that makes possible the questioning and disruption of unexamined and all too often oppressive binaries of how we view the struggle toward equity in education. The linkage of service-learning and social justice education in this manner offers a “weak overcoming” that strengthens experiential learning toward justice while avoiding the dilution and radicalization faced by both movements. I, thus, trace the linkages between service-learning and social justice education; explicate the potential of antifoundational service-learning as a form of anti-anti-social justice; and draw out the potential and implication of this linkage for both service-learning and social justice education.     

Graduate Social Work Students' Attitudes Toward Service-Learning

Service-learning attitudes among graduate social work students enrolled in a course on human diversity and oppression are presented. A survey was administered at the beginning and at the end of the semester to students enrolled in the course, which was taught using a service-learning approach. Among the results were believing that service-learning aided in meeting learning goals and higher overall satisfaction with the service-learning experience. This article expands the literature on service-learning in social work education and promotes the use of this experiential method in social work diversity curricula.
