Many traditional academics view the advent of on-line teaching in higher education with suspicion. They suspect that attempts to compare the outcomes of traditional and on-line instruction do not yield valid results. Nevertheless, on-line instruction is here to stay. It behooves an organization like the American Association of University Professors, a major role of which is to protect academic freedom in American higher education institutions, to make sure that the integration of on-line instruction into the activities of traditional higher education institutions will give rise, in the case of the new component, to the same guarantees as to academic freedom and quality, determined primarily by the faculty, as in traditional university activities.  相似文献

In 1997, the University of Texas (UT) System initiated the development of the UT TeleCampus, a centralized facilitation point for distance learning. The TeleCampus opened its virtual doors in May 1998. At the start, its focus was entirely on support services for students. By late 1998, however, the TeleCampus had begun developing what would become collaborative benchmark on-line programmes for the UT System. Since then, in developing more than twelve complete on-line degree programmes, the administrators of the TeleCampus have learned lessons about creating and maintaining quality in collaborative, Web-based, distance, for-credit, education courses and degree programmes. Some of the key issues arising from the collaborative nature of these programmes and methods that are used to ensure that each course meets a high-quality standard are discussed.  相似文献

To assure quality in distance learning programmes, a new type of university teacher must emerge. He or she must be energized and challenged by meeting the needs of expanding categories of learners who are coping with new definitions of a semester, utilizing alternative methods for gaining access to and sharing information, incorporating emerging technologies into teaching and learning processes, and adapting to an increased focus upon student performance. To reach these goals, university teachers must be provided with the necessary training, instructional assistance, and incentives to develop basic changes in their behaviour for which few models exist and little experience has been realized. This article outlines seven characteristics of a university teacher who is ready to meet the challenges that a distance learning network provides.  相似文献

针对一些工科院校忽视工程素质教育,即重科学轻技术、重理论轻实践的现象,结合材料学科的专业特点改革实验教学,构建了跨专业方向的渐进式工程素质教育体系.其中基础实践平台旨在增强学生的基本实验技能,专业实践平台培养专业综合技能,项目实践平台以学生的创新精神和工程实践提高能力为目标.该体系的建立突破了传统的实践教学模式,改善了实践环境和实践手段,使学生的工程实践能力和创新能力得到较大的提高,为推进工程素质教育进行了有益的探索和实践.  相似文献

This paper discusses the alternative structure of engineering courses in Italy and how they prepare graduated engineers for entrance into the production field. It is stressed that a rational approach is necessary to face the problem of satisfactorily matching the increasing requirements of cultural and professional education to the response of the educational system in the scientific and technological area. As nations worldwide strive to compete in a globally interconnected knowledge society the importance of innovative forms of education is being increasingly recognized. In doing so, many education systems look to comparative and international experience for guidance and inspiration. Malaysia aims to become a regional hub for high quality education and economic creativity by 2020, and educational reform is seen as a central component in this strategy. This article examines the key factors, at home and abroad, that have influenced changes in the Malaysian education policy context. It then documents the origins, nature and development of one contemporary educational innovation – the Malaysian Clusters of Excellence Policy. Conclusions reflect upon the place and potential of this key initiative in supporting broader development goals designed to transform the nation into a leading knowledge society within the Southeast Asia region.  相似文献
