In order to offer worthwhile philosophical perspectives on the form education should take in the face of the rise of ethnic, religious, and cultural pluralism (factors that frequently overlap), many historical, economic, and political threads have to be untangled and their significance understood. In all the nations discussed in this issue tensions exist, fostered by a variety of factors that differ from country to country. In the end, the commonalities across the nations sampled are more startling than the differences. Demographic, economic, and political factors are leading nations to face the same set of theoretical/philosophical issues about multiculturalism.  相似文献

This number is a special issue on the proletarian educational revolution. July 21, 1970 was the second anniversary of the issuance of our great leader, Chairman Mao's, brilliant directive "Take the road of the Shanghai Machine Tool Plant in selecting technicians from among the workers." Over the past two years, guided by Chairman Mao's revolutionary line, the proletarian educational revolution has made great progress, and during the struggle-criticism-transformation revolutionary mass movement many progressive signs have appeared. ABSTRACT

While the use of numbers in governance has a long history, the kinds of numbers we now produce enable a range of new possibilities for monitoring, regulation and policy decision-making. Global policy actors are now calling for a steep increase in investment in education data. The growing trust in numbers has been critiqued by education policy scholars and social scientists, who have pointed to the reductionist nature of numbers and the dangerous decontextualisation of information which are leading to detrimental policies. The entry of big data poses even more complex epistemological and ontological challenges, many of which we do not fully understand as yet. This paper acknowledges these challenges, and at the same time speculates that big data might afford unique possibilities for new relational theories that may lead to better policy decision-making.  相似文献

In appreciating and responding to the three symposium papers on “Anarchism, Texts and Children”, a case is made for what John Berger has called “the honour of an alternative”, for affirmation as well as for refusal. Not only should we respond positively and imaginatively to Colin Ward’s call for “counter-history” of our own making, we should also extend our advocacy of alternatives through the adventure of more creative historical methodologies. Lastly, in the spirit of Berger’s writing, this Afterword celebrates the capacity of all three papers not just to speak to issues of enduring human importance, but to do so imaginatively and eloquently, thereby refusing and subverting the increasingly dreary hegemony of academic writing disgracefully in thrall to the diminishing calculus of neo-liberalism.  相似文献
