Summary

Electronic library services and myriad online resources are shifting the roles and workloads of academic reference librarians. Reallocation of staffing through a differentiated reference desk service model provides time to author curriculum-centered online research guides and tutorials, bibliographies, and webliographies. The expanding electronic information environment also opens new opportunities for teaching partnerships with university faculty. This article showcases a librarian's collaborative work with a history professor, noting student benefits/reactions and implications for future collaboration.  相似文献

Abstract

Librarians at Northwest Vista College, a new community college, speculated that keeping faculty members informed about the library and its various resources would result in more instructors sending students to the library for library instruction and, ultimately, it would result in more students who were familiar with and comfortable using the library. This paper describes the librarians' comprehensive faculty outreach effort, which involved putting on special workshops for faculty, creating online forms, and Web links on the library Web page, and taking every opportunity to increase contact and collaboration between librarians and Other faculty and Staff.  相似文献

Geospatial data stewardship fosters user-driven collection, management, access, reuse, and preservation of location-based data. Academic and research libraries are poised to be at the center of geospatial data stewardship, working with partners to develop a sustainable, geospatial data stewardship hub. This article argues for the essential role of libraries in leading collaborative partnerships to develop a user-driven, spatial data infrastructure that includes people, policies, standards, community perspectives, and operational workflows. The emerging model of partnership-based spatial data infrastructure described at the Washington University Libraries demonstrates working methods in practice.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

In today's economy, higher education institutions are struggling to maintain quality while functioning with fewer resources. For libraries, the economic situation is compounded by the impact of an information marketplace that is characterized by prices for resources that increase at 7 to 10% per year, and by near and actual monopolies controlling content. Added to the complexities of the marketplace are the demands of a faculty and student body that prefer individual actions to group efforts. These economic and social issues can become real barriers to innovation, quality improvement, and successful services for today's libraries. One way to combat the economic and social environment is by creating new and improved partnerships to leverage resources and share expertise in order to provide better services and access to wider collections. But forming partnerships is not easy. This paper will review the characteristics of successful partnership as developed by the Gallup Corporation and will show how these values can be used in the academic library environment to create opportunities for success.  相似文献

While academic librarians have always sought to create the best services for college faculty and students, the increasingly self-defined “teacher-librarian” needs more than ever to promote positive relationships and collaboration with classroom faculty. Based on a review of library literature, this article explores the nature of several disconnects between librarians and college or university faculty and examines the ways in which library outreach to faculty in its various forms seeks to bridge those gaps. The author maintains that library outreach addresses the issues between librarians and may result in higher levels of advocacy, collaboration, and collegiality.  相似文献

Abstract

Effective reference services and collection development in a small academic library depend upon collaborative planning and performance by the entire library staff. Coordination of library activities and understanding of the library and college mission are the foundations of a program responsive to the needs of the college community. Partnerships between the library and classroom faculty ensure that curricular needs are satisfied through activities as diverse as bibliographic instruction and materials acquisition. This paper describes a model program at DePaul University of partnering the Library with an academic department, specifically the School for New Learning. This department was established solely to serve the non-traditional adult student and lifelong learner. The historical background of adult education, the development of the School for New Learning, the shared goal of the Library and the department, the history and development of the partnership, the role of the library liaison, and how the partnership has changed the curriculum and library programs are discussed. 随着纲目购书和用户驱动采购越来越多地被采用,传统图书馆员"书目专家"的角色逐渐减弱,迫使图书馆朝着一个更侧重于互动和参与的联络工作模式转型。罗格斯大学图书馆正在使用一个由哈伍德公共创新研究所开发,用来确定馆员和用户的需求和愿望的模型,实施"转向外部"的过程。罗格斯大学图书馆已经针对本科生、研究生和国际学生这三个群体开展对话,随后把谈话记录进行整理,划分主题,并进行总结。"转向外部"的成果帮助罗格斯大学图书馆重新定义图书馆员的角色,精心制作新的职务说明,为图书馆服务的组织结构革新迈出重要的一步。本文主要阐述转型过程、具体措施、目前的成果,以及未来的计划。  相似文献

This article profiles the development and implementation of an undergraduate study abroad program developed by librarians and a finance professor at the University of Maryland (UMD). The authors collaboratively developed and taught, in 2012, 2013, and 2014, an innovative short-term course to Nicaragua, BMGT 448N: Doing Business in Nicaragua: Microfinance in Action, in which UMD students provided hands-on consulting to Nicaraguan entrepreneurs, an international microlending organization, and small business start-ups affiliated with a Nicaraguan University. In keeping with the UMD's mission of internationalization this course provided students with a service-learning and a study abroad experience.  相似文献

This study explores new faculty members' and librarians' perceptions of a program that provides each new faculty member with funds to purchase materials supporting their teaching and scholarship. The article describes the results of a survey of perceptions of the faculty and librarians who have participated in the program at Illinois State University. The findings suggest that the program has not been successful as a recruitment tool but has been very valuable for establishing early and strong subject liaison relationships with new faculty members.  相似文献

Abstract

Academic libraries have often participated in outreach to their surrounding communities. This article focuses on independent outreach efforts of academic libraries to move beyond their walls or traditional clientele. Academic libraries determine their interaction with their communities based on three factors: whether a need is expressed from outside the academy, whether they see their mission as an invitation to pursue an action on their own accord, or whether they construct a form of outreach in response to a specific problem or crisis. Most libraries, public and private, recognize outreach as part of their mission and obligation to the community. This article examines why libraries choose to initiate outreach programs.  相似文献

The Hospital Library Services Program (HLSP) in western New York, during the period covered by its first five-year plan, 1984-1989, is recounted and described. This ongoing program is funded annually by a New York State grant and hospital participation fees. It is designed to support access to biomedical information for health care professionals through a grant program for hospitals with staffed libraries and a circuit program for hospitals without library staffing or without libraries. Hospitals participating in the grant program contribute funds and receive grants for collection development. Hospitals participating in the circuit program pay a participation fee and receive regularly scheduled, documented, circuit librarian visits; a collection development grant; and a grant for contract library services. The program contracts with the State University of New York at Buffalo's (UB) Health Sciences Library to provide computerized literature searches; interlibrary loan (ILL) of journal articles, books, and audiovisuals; and ILL referrals.  相似文献

The bilingual “Research for Teens” Web site was developed by academic research librarians as an outreach tool that teaches library research skills to teens. Connecting with a teenage audience can be difficult. Universities and businesses with Web sites should not ignore this difficult to please population and potential audience. The site's emphasis is on practicality and evaluation, and the research strategies apply to any library. Tompkins-McCaw Library of Virginia Commonwealth University has planned and implemented four one-year outreach service projects during the past two years. These projects were funded by the National Library of Medicine and the National Network of Libraries of Medicine Southeastern/Atlantic Region. The projects focus on information access for public health nurses, HIV/AIDS information access, and circuit librarian services in rural Southern Virginia. This article documents issues and challenges which have been identified from these projects and suggests ways to resolve them.  相似文献

This case study describes a cooperative venture between a progressive faculty member and two librarians. The venture began as an experiment to introduce students to the kinds of external information sources they would likely encounter in the business world, to aid in strategic planning and to achieve (or maintain) a competitive edge. It was a revelation to some students that many of the same information sources available in their library are precisely those used in the corporate world. The session was team taught in a classroom using a mobile instruction unit, and included a discussion of various external information sources, their format and scope, followed by a CD-ROM demonstration (focusing on search strategies). Questions were encouraged throughout the period. In, addition, "lab" sessions in the library featuring a hands-on CD-ROM session and the demonstration of an online search (using DATA-STAR) were scheduled for those students unfamiliar with these information sources. The venture proved successful and was repeated.  相似文献
