Librarians' Roles in Evidence-Based Dentistry Education: A Review of Literature and a Survey in North America

This study describes the current roles of dental librarians in Evidence-based Dentistry (EBD) education including their perceptions of EBD and barriers to their involvement. A Web-based survey was distributed to the dental librarians in North America, with a 71% response rate. The results showed that the majority of dental librarians are playing multiple and diverse roles in EBD education. The most frequently cited barrier to their involvement is the low level of interest from the dental faculty/student/school. Most dental librarians felt competent in supporting EBD, although continuing education needs in both EBD and teaching skills were pointed out.     

Library instruction for biology courses: A literature review and survey

The content of library instruction sessions associated with college biology is examined. A review of the literature is supplemented by a survey of instruction librarians at Ohio institutions offering biology majors. The literature and survey responses indicate that a typical instruction session occurs once during an academic term, highlights automated access to the library catalog and Biological Abstracts, discusses the difference between journals and magazines, and does not test the students or offer an opportunity for evaluation of the instruction session. More of the library instruction sessions described in the literature were associated with introductory biology courses than in the survey responses.     

Librarians' experiences of the teaching role: A national survey of librarians

A Canadian national survey of 788 library staff doing instructional work revealed that most participants expected to be doing some teaching in their workplaces, and the largest proportion of participants have been teaching for more than 10 years. Most instruction continues to take the form of short presentations to groups of learners. On the whole, preparatory experiences are informal—on-the-job experience, reading professional literature, and attending workshops. The majority of respondents identify instructional work as integral to their professional identity, but nearly one-third see this work as a duty or expectation, and a small proportion view it as an imposition. The study results have implications for design of programs that prepare library staff for the workplace, and for library managers who need to support effective instructional practice.     

Pharmaceutical published literature databases: a survey

Pharmaceutical companies often maintain a bibliographic database of published articles on their products. Although such databases share the common purpose of providing the company with a centralized source of published information, the databases themselves vary in scope, uses, and technologies. In order to explore the current status of these databases, a survey was conducted in early 1995. This article provides an overview of pharmaceutical product literature databases and the results from that survey.

Ovid's evidence-based medicine reviews: a review of a clinical information product

Evidence-Based Medicine Reviews (EBMR) is a new full-text product from Ovid Technologies. EBMR supports the practice of evidence-based medicine (EBM) by providing access to two premiere EBM resources: the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews from the international Cochrane Collaboration, and Best Evidence from the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine. Both resources alert health care professionals, researchers, and librarians to clinically relevant and methodologically sound studies by providing access to full-text reviews and meta-analyses of clinical literature. Value-added features include links to EBMR from MEDLINE, alerting MEDLINE users to available reviews. An "EBM Reviews" limit within MEDLINE facilitates access to the EBMR database contents.     

Supporting evidence-based medicine: a survey of U.S. medical librarians

This study sought to identify medical librarians' roles in supporting evidence-based medicine (EBM) practice; determine whether medical librarians' work settings, work experiences, or job titles made a difference in their EBM responsibilities; and find out medical librarians' perceptions of their roles in EBM practice. An online survey was distributed to U.S. medical librarians. The results showed that medical librarians had positive perceptions of their EBM-related responsibilities, which were diverse and specific. Their work experience, work settings, and job title categories related to some of their EBM responsibilities, as well as the nature of some of the responsibilities.     

Librarians' assistance to students in the information seeking process: Perspectives of higher education teachers and librarians

Seeking information is an integral part of the tasks that students are assigned by their teachers. They turn to librarians, or librarians offer them assistance in relation to this pursuit. This qualitative study sought to obtain in-depth insights on the perceptions and expectations of university teachers and librarians with respect to the importance of and students' participation and librarians' assistance in the information seeking process. Teachers and librarians understand the importance of the information-seeking process for students in the development of their skills. Whereas most of their perceptions of the students' roles in the process do align, there are certain differences in their perceptions and expectations of students. The results enhance the understanding of the information-seeking process and teachers and librarians' perceptions on it. They contribute toward planning to facilitate cooperation between academic librarians and teachers in situations of information behavior resulting from the educational process and context.     

Russian Digital Collections in North America: A Survey

This article discusses an inventory of Russian digital collections that was gathered from publically available material on the Web in 2011. It touches on the opportunities and difficulties that come with the increase of digital material on the Web and how librarians can attempt to bring smaller collections to the attention of scholars and researchers.     

The use of grey literature in health sciences: a preliminary survey

The paper describes some initiatives in the field of grey literature (GL) and the activities, from 1985, of the Italian Library Association Study Group. The major categories of GL are defined; a survey that evaluates the use of GL by end users in the health sciences is described. References in selected periodicals and databases have been analyzed for the years 1987-1988 to determine the number of articles citing GL, the number of GL citations found in selected periodicals, the various types of GL found, and the number of technical reports cited and their country of origin and intergovernmental issuing organization. Selected databases were also searched to determine the presence of GL during those same years. The paper presents the first results obtained.     

The ethics of scholarly peer review: a review of the literature

This review summarizes the literature of a subset of the published research and commentary on peer review – the ethics of peer review. It attempts to track the various ethical issues that arise among the key participants in peer‐review systems: authors, editors, referees, and readers. These issues include: bias, courtesy, conflict of interest, redundant publication, honesty, transparency, and training. It concludes that debates over such issues as open vs. blind reviews continue unresolved but that new technologies offer some prospects for resolving old issues while they also may create new challenges.

A review of conservation treatments of waterlogged basketry from the northwest coast of North America

Abstract

Basketry artifacts fabricated from spruce and cedar limb wood and root and the inner bark of yellow and western red cedar have been found in water-saturated archaeological sites in the Pacific Northwest since the mid-twentieth century. These artifacts range in age from a few centuries to more than 5000 years old. While these materials retain their overall physical structure due to burial in an anoxic environment they are degraded on the cellular level. Experiments and treatments performed by archaeologists and conservators over the past 50 years have attempted to stabilize these degraded structures and minimize splitting, crumbing, and distortion of the woven structures as they dried. Many of these tests and treatments are published in out-of-print conference proceedings or remain unpublished in conservation lab records. This review of tests and treatments as well as a current condition assessment of several collections brings this information together for the first time and allows conservators and archaeologists specializing in these treatments to see the broader arch of success and failure of the preservation of waterlogged basketry materials.     

Defining and achieving quality in cataloging in academic libraries: a literature review

The subject of quality has received much attention in the past twenty years. Yet quality has remained an ill-defined and subjective term. This article explores the meaning of quality in terms of cataloging for the academic library. The evolving nature of quality in cataloging is discussed. Attempts at achieving quality in cataloging are viewed in terms of Deming's 14 points to transform an organization. Particular attention is paid to customer focus and continuous improvement.
