Available evidence suggests that changes in the funding of higher education have led to some students entering the sex industry in order to make ends meet. The current study comprises a sample of undergraduates (N = 130) in the south of England, who completed a cross‐sectional survey of their financial circumstances, health, psychological well‐being, substance use and lifestyle. A response rate of 74% was obtained. Data indicated that over 10% of all respondents knew of students engaged in sex work (defined as prostitution, escorting, lap dancing or stripping) in order to support themselves financially. Poor psychological well‐being, drinking problems and financial circumstances were associated with sex work, and although no direct evidence was found linking this to an earlier history of sexual abuse, there was an indirect relationship through the impact of abuse on mental health. A logistic regression model incorporating General Health Questionnaire scores, alcohol problems and hours worked outside of study strongly predicted whether respondents knew of students engaged in sex work. For lap dancing in particular the model was very strong. This study provides further evidence of students' participation in sex work and its association with economic circumstances. Further longitudinal work is required to clarify the nature of these relationships.  相似文献

The study examined the perceptions of a national sample of teachers of students who are deaf or hard or hearing to assess their level of job satisfaction. A questionnaire was developed and distributed; 610 completed surveys were analyzed. Overall, respondents appeared satisfied with their jobs. Of the 59 items in the survey, 51 were scored as positive for the group as a whole. Participants reported that their relationships with colleagues were the most enjoyable aspect of the job. Paperwork, state assessment tests, and lack of family involvement were identified as the least satisfying aspects. Data were also analyzed by comparing the responses of teachers across groups--itinerant, elementary, secondary, and resource room. Generally, this group-by-group analysis produced findings similar to those for the overall sample. Recommendations on addressing the specific factors that teachers responded to negatively are provided.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate whether significant group, gender, and grade differences existed in the learning style preferences of students with learning disabilities and students who are gifted, using the Learning Style Inventory (LSI) (Dunn, Dunn, & Price, 1987). Subjects consisted of 53 students with learning disabilities and 64 gifted students randomly selected from two large public high schools. They were 10th-, 11th-, and 12th-grade students, aged 15 to 17. A three-way analysis of variance on the LSI raw scores revealed significant group differences in preferences for light, design, and kinesthetic modality, and in motivation, persistence, responsibility, parent motivation, and teacher motivation. Significant gender and grade differences were found in preferences for mobility and learning in the afternoon, respectively. A stepwise discriminant analysis revealed six variables that significantly discriminated between the two groups. Findings imply that incorporating the learning styles of students with learning disabilities and students who are gifted is important for individualizing educational programming.  相似文献

The theory of correspondence between school and work assumed a general process of deskilling and job fragmentation, setting up clear demands from industry for workers who were docile and passive rather than creative or adaptable. Critics of correspondence have either ignored this feature of the original theory or assumed a similar process of deskilling. Discussion of job redesign within industrial sociology suggests a more complex picture of the division of labour within industry. This suggests the possibility of other forms of correspondence between education and work and ultimately strengthens recent arguments pointing to the relative autonomy of education.  相似文献

Beliefs serve as an adaptation that helps teachers organize their teaching world. Little is known, however, about how beliefs change and serve to help retain and sustain teachers, particularly for beginning teachers who are most likely to leave teaching. This study explores teachers' beliefs about students in the US (N = 67) and if these beliefs change during the first five years of teaching. Results indicate that teachers hold beliefs about students that capture pride and participation. Over time, these beliefs become more positive. Implications for teacher education and policy are discussed.  相似文献

Academic problems of the dyslexic child often persist in adult life. Such problems as spelling can interfere with the performance of such adult learners in college. Federal legislation requires reasonable accommodation for these students. At some colleges, this consists of allowing use of tape recorders in lectures and sometimes allowing extra time on examinations. Remediation of reading, writing, and spelling among dyslexic college students is often not addressed. This study reports the use of a modified Orton-Gillingham approach in comparison with a nonphonetic approach and with a group receiving no remediation. The results indicate a significant increase in spelling performance for the group receiving the modified Orton-Gillingham remediation. This contrasts with no significant change in the group receiving nonphonetic remediation and in the control group (no remediation), and indicates that adulthood is not too late for appropriate intervention for the dyslexic student. Colleges offering such intervention and the students receiving it will benefit from improved performance.  相似文献

Participation in service-learning courses has always been considered a part of the informal education in tertiary education worldwide. Originating from the assumption that service-learning courses increase students’ civic engagement and bridge the gap between knowledge and practice, service-learning courses have gradually acquired the status of compulsory courses at universities. This being as it may be, it would seem that the nature of such courses would benefit from further analysis and discussion regarding their function in knowledge reproduction, and their role in teaching and education. The aim of this article is to examine and analyze a university service-learning course—the National Taiwan University (NTU) Star-Rain course with a commitment to serving children with autism—from a Foucaultian perspective, and reflect on how the process of putting knowledge during a service-learning course into practice comes to constitute the subjectivity of students who work with children who are autistic. We argue that the course under investigation has, in effect, become wholly entangled in the medical system’s treatment of autism in Taiwan. The service-learning process involves knowledge acquisition as well as long-term, detailed, concrete hands-on experience, and shapes, in a very complete way, students’ construction of their subject knowledge of autism.  相似文献

成人教育是我国国民教育的重要组成部分之一,其主要的招生和培养对象是已经从事工作的在职人群,这些人主要的入学目的是为了进一步的提升自身的专业水平和学历水平。由于进入成人教育学校的学生在入学前已经具备了一定的工作经验,他们带着自身的经验和对社会生活的认知进入学校,这些学生对于教育教学的目的性和实用性和有一定的要求,对于成功学的追求和欲望相比较于传统的全日制的学生更加明显,成人教育的学生对于知识的学习具有明显的职业性的要求和实用性的要求,这些学生把自己的学习看做是高等教育的延续或者是对知识和学历和投资。但是由于其自身的经历和背景,成人教育的学生具有明显的自我意识,对于教育的接受和批判明显的淡化,因此,其思想政治教育工作的教育方式明显不同于全日制的教学,长期以来,成人教育思想政治工作被忽视,在教务教学管理中的地位模糊,没有被真正纳入到成人教育的教学管理中去。  相似文献
