Reference Services and Media in Academic Libraries

Summary

This paper examines the impact of new and developing media on academic libraries, specifically discussing technology which enables video and movie clips to be transferred over intranets and the Internet. This Web technology could have implications for other electronic media and databases, for offering extended services, including training and orientation for new staff and students; and for online library instruction modules. More generally, the article will discuss some issues, ramifications, protocols, and legal implications involved when libraries introduce and implement new multimedia services and other web-based resources.

Reference Services for Disabled Individuals in Academic Libraries

Reference services for disabled students require not only traditional directional and informational assistance, but also physical assistance. Providing this service takes planning, commitment and funding on the part of the librarians providing the service and on the part of the library administration. A well- lanned staff development program should be offered to the entire [braly staff on a regular basis in order to increase awareness of disabled library users' needs and to sensitize the staff to their physical limitations. This will help to overcome barriers in library facilities and collections.

Creating Collaborative Workstations for Reference and Public Use in Academic Libraries

ABSTRACT

The current focus on libraries as place involves the collaborative needs of library users for features such as movable furniture, group work areas, and amenities such as coffee shops. Additional attention needs to focus on how the technology infrastructure can support collaborative work in academic libraries. The one-user-one-machine setup common in many academic libraries does not do this. A collaborative workstation that is inexpensive and readily assembled is described along with equipment needs and costs. The impact of such a collaborative workstation for both reference work and public use is discussed.     

Cooperation Between Circulation and Reference Departments in Academic Health Sciences Libraries

User education, public relations, and reference questions are areas of library service which involve both the reference and circulation departments in academic health sciences libraries. In other ways, however, the two departments function independently in the provision of services. For accurate role perceptions to exist among staff members, there is a need to define clearly the functional boundary between the two departments. The key to increasing cooperation and encouraging joint efforts lies in understanding the public service roles of each department.

Virtual Reference Services (VRS) have high user satisfaction. The main problem is its low usage. We surveyed 100 academic library web sites to understand how VRS are presented. We then conducted a usability study to further test an active VRS model regarding its effectiveness.
