根据学科馆员制度的目的和意义是“有针对性的主动服务”的实质，以中国特色理论为指导，提出了高校图书馆全面推行学科馆员制的一种实施模式，提出了具有可操作性的建议。     

Implementing a Library Liaison Program

Abstract

A pilot library liaison program was initiated with the College of Liberal Arts at Southern Illinois University at Carbon-dale. The goals were to facilitate communication with academic faculties, enhance collection development, and improve services. A uniform training program was implemented. Budgets were allocated, and negotiations for new moneys were held in a group setting. Following training, meetings were held with academic department chairs, library liaisons, and the library's Director of Reference Services and Collection Management to activate the program. The pilot program was assessed and then expanded to all sixty teaching departments on campus, using guidelines that had evolved during the pilot program. The centrality of the library as a service unit is affirmed in increased understanding and cooperation between librarians and teaching faculty. The program is continually monitored in an effort to keep the program flexible and responsive to changing needs.

The Library Liaison Toolkit: Learning to Bridge the Communication Gap

SUMMARY

SUNY New Paltz established a library liaison program in 2001, long after such programs were commonplace at many U.S. college and university libraries. The program emerged, not simply from a desire to enhance library service, but because library faculty came to view it as a multi-faceted mechanism capable of addressing multiple concerns. The new library-wide initiative demanded high-level communication skills, an in-depth understanding of library policies and collection development practices, and increased knowledge about individual departments and the college. A collection of campus information resources and liaison training sessions, collectively called The Library Liaison Toolkit, was developed to build liaison expertise in these areas.     

The Virtual Library Liaison: A Case Study at an Online University

ABSTRACT

Capella University, an online university, started its library liaison program in 2007. The goals of the program were to increase the use of library resources and services and promote integration of information literacy competencies into coursework. A review of the literature of liaison programs shows a focus on liaison activities in traditional colleges and universities. While some activities are adaptable to the online environment, this setting provides unique opportunities for enhancing the impact of the liaison relationship. This article will describe key initiatives in three areas: the online course room, reference transactions, and collaboration with both academic and nonacademic departments. Strategies, activities, and tools used to implement the initiatives will be discussed.

Re-visioning a Library Liaison Program in Light of External Forces and Internal Pressures

Liaison librarian roles have existed for many years within the academic environment. Initially taking the form of reference, instruction, and collection development – often with subject specialization – the activities of liaisons have adapted and evolved in response to changing library user needs. In response to such changing needs and internal pressures, the Health Sciences Library at McMaster University is in the process of re-visioning its liaison program. The result is a set of proposed models informed by the literature and institutional context which contributed to the selection of a new direction for liaisons. Key steps reported in this article include a review of the literature, rationale and context, a librarian survey, and final decision.     

Measuring Reference Transactions in School Library Media Programs

Many output measures for use in evaluating school library media program outcomes are already in place. HOwever, the use and reliability of other potential measures has not yet been demonstrated. Measuring the results of reference services is among the areas which still require methodology development, adaptation, and validation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential use of reference transaction measures (Transaction Analysis, Reference Completion Rate, and Transactions Per Student) in school library media programs. Participating in this study were library media specialists from secondary schools (middle and high) in selected central North Carolina public school districts. Results of the Reference Transaction Module demonstrated that it can help library media programs identify, quantify, analyze, and compare the results of reference services in their school library media program. The process as tested will add to individual school library media specialist's knowledge of their program.
