Statistical Survey to Determine Availability of Cataloging Copy on OCLC

This paper reports the results of a year-long survey conducted at the University of Pittsburgh (Pitt) to determine what level of cataloging copy (Library of Congress, member input, or none) is present on OCLC at the time an item is received in Technical Services and after a six-month waiting period. These results were used to divert selected monographs from the normal workflow in order to expedite their cataloging and to release needed shelf space for other items.     

Cataloging Databases and Web Sites in OCLC and Voyager

Use of dynamic links from subject-based finding aids to records for electronic resources in the OPAC is suggested as one method for by-passing the OPAC search interface, thus making the library's electronic resources more accessible. This method simplifies maintenance of links to electronic resources and aids instruction by providing a single, consistent access point to them. Results of a usage study from before and after this project was completed show a consistent, often dramatic increase in use of the library's electronic resources.

The role of the Cataloging Department in the implementation of OCLC WorldCat Local

OCLC WorldCat Local (WCL) is a unique service that connects library users to local, regional, and OCLC WorldCat results in a single discovery-and-delivery interface. In spring 2009, Washington State University (WSU) Libraries decided to implement WCL. All WSU Libraries' departments played important roles in the implementation process. It is the focus of this paper to discuss the role of WSU Cataloging Department during the implementation process in terms of training staff to catalog at the network level, changing cataloging policies and procedures, preparing old catalog for WCL, and collaborating with other WSU Libraries' departments.

通过比较研究地方版文献联合采编协作网(CRLNet)几个有代表性成员馆的音像资料编目数据发现,目前国内图书馆的音像资料编目存在各自为政、编目数据大相径庭的现象,其主要原因是没有统一的编目规则。为统一CRLNet音像资料的著录规则,深圳图书馆征求各成员馆的意见并结合音像资料工作实践提出,音像资料的著录可以参见著录电子资源的某些字段,但是主体仍应该遵循录音、录像资料的编目规则。     

Single-Record versus Separate-Record Approaches for Cataloging E-Serials in the OCLC WorldCat Local Environment

Libraries have been making decisions on whether to use a single- or separate-record approach for cataloging e-serials based on what works best in their local library integrated systems and which approach is likely to save cataloging time. However, in the new network-level cataloging and OCLC WorldCat Local environment, we need to make cataloging decisions based on what works best in a network-level platform. This article discusses the OCLC WorldCat Local environment, the concept of network-level cataloging, and why Washington State University has responded by migrating from a single-record to separate-record cataloging policy for e-serials.

Romanization in Cataloging of Korean Materials

ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes cataloging rules for Korean materials focusing on the McCune-Reischauer (MR)¹ system, the Korean romanization scheme currently used in the United States. This system has been used for a long time in many Western countries, and was officially adopted by the Library of Congress (LC) for use in the cataloging of Korean language materials. Considering users' information-seeking behavior and searching abilities, however, the MR system has many drawbacks for increasing users' ability to retrieve information. This paper analyzes bibliographic records in academic libraries, the LC, and the Research Libraries Information Network (RLIN) to identify the issues and problems of the MR system. A user survey conducted demonstrates that the MR system is not a user-customized tool based on users' searching ability. Several solutions are suggested to overcome the limitations of the MR system.

A Brief Survey of ARL Libraries' Cataloging of Instructional Materials

In the Fall of 1991. the Original Cataloging Unit of The LSU Libraries conducted a survey of ARL Libraries to deter- mine the current policies of academic libraries regarding cataloging and classification of audiovisual materials. Audiovisual materials including kits, teacher manuals, workbooks and a variety of mixed formats provide unique problems for both the librarian and cataloger . . alike. - Of.the 95 libraries contacted, 75 responded. Results indicated a wide variety of policies, not only in the cataloging and classification of these materials, but also in shelving and location. With no ap ar- ent standard, most libraries have devised their own plan to meet eir needs. tR

Main Issues in Cataloging Persian Language Materials in North America

ABSTRACT

The main problems of cataloging Persian language materials as it is practiced in North America are discussed. The problems are grouped by origin: those that originate from the implementation of the ALA-LC Romanization Tables for Persian; those that occur either because of misleading examples used in that Table's rules for application section, or a lack of functional knowledge of Persian; and those that appear in the treatment of names generally and choice and form of main entry specifically, due to the application of inappropriate rules for Persian names. Suggestions for dealing with these cataloging issues are presented.
