This paper explores the methodological and theoretical issues that need to be addressed in testing the validity of proposed correlations between the rise of a certain class of words and the development of literacy. Olson and Astington (in press) suggest a correlation between the rise of a) assertive speech act verbs such asobserve, state, andclaim, b) literacy, and c) the Enlightenment. Data from the history of speech act verbs in English do not provide evidence for any privileged correlation with the Enlightenment, since assertives abound from Old and especially Middle English on. Possible correlations with literacy point not to writing as the motivating force but rather to the language of the law-courts, feudal practices, and rhetorical debate in the Middle Ages. This paper is being reprinted from Judith Langer (Ed.),Language, Literacy and Culture: Issues of Society and Schooling/it (Norwood, NJ: Ablex, 1987) with the permission of the publisher. 相似文献

Redesigning a curriculum for inquiry: an ecology case study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

This article reports on an interdisciplinary ecology degree that was redesigned to provide more research activity for undergraduates.
A case study approach explored how the teaching team constructed a curriculum that used inquiry activities. The development
of an inquiry curriculum was enabled by a University audit focusing on the links between teaching and research, a Programme
Review that signalled a need for change, and a Programme Director and group of academics committed to change. In addition,
curriculum planning discussions were facilitated by an academic staff developer, who developed a shared vision for an inquiry
approach during extended conversations amongst the planning group. Consequently, the new programme progressively develops
inquiry skills in four out of five core courses (papers/modules). At stages 1 and 2, structured, guided and open inquiry activities
lead to an open inquiry capstone course at stage 3. 相似文献

Claire Norris, former research associate at Moray House Institute of Education, and Alison Closs, a lecturer in special education at the Institute, describe a small research project which examined the interpersonal relationships between children with chronic and/or deteriorating conditions and their parents and teachers. The research was one aspect of a wider study (Closs & Norris, 1997) which sought ways of enabling the mainstream education of such children in Scotland. 相似文献

Teacher education for inclusive education (IE) is recognized as vital for improving quality and equity in education globally. In the Western Balkan countries it is also part of the transition process towards joining the European Union and has attracted international funding for IE-related projects. A key finding from research funded by the European Training Foundation, carried out by the authors as members of a seven-country research team in 2009?C2010, was that the prevailing local understanding of IE was very narrow. In this article we hypothesize the reasons for this finding. We use a case study of school and teacher education systems in Serbia to explore how this understanding has constrained the development of IE and associated teacher education and limited the efficacy of some recent internationally supported developments. We identify both challenges and possible ways forward for teacher education for IE based on promoting a concept of IE that is both collaboratively agreed and comprehensive. 相似文献
