An integrated, multiparametric flow cytometry chip using "microfluidic drifting" based three-dimensional hydrodynamic focusing

In this work, we demonstrate an integrated, single-layer, miniature flow cytometry device that is capable of multi-parametric particle analysis. The device integrates both particle focusing and detection components on-chip, including a "microfluidic drifting" based three-dimensional (3D) hydrodynamic focusing component and a series of optical fibers integrated into the microfluidic architecture to facilitate on-chip detection. With this design, multiple optical signals (i.e., forward scatter, side scatter, and fluorescence) from individual particles can be simultaneously detected. Experimental results indicate that the performance of our flow cytometry chip is comparable to its bulky, expensive desktop counterpart. The integration of on-chip 3D particle focusing with on-chip multi-parametric optical detection in a single-layer, mass-producible microfluidic device presents a major step towards low-cost flow cytometry chips for point-of-care clinical diagnostics.

13th World Olympic Collectors＇ Fair opens in Beijing OLYMPIC COLLECTORS＇ RENDEZVOUS

Fans and collectors of Olympics-related souvenirs such as coins and stamps flocked to the 13th World Olympic Collectors＇ Fair which took place from June 22 to 28. Visitors from numerous countries attended the six-day fair which showcases more than a century of treasures representing the various stages of the Olympic movement.Collectors from across the world brought their collections to Beijing to exchange with Chinese collectors and to show to Chinese people the greatness of the Olympic collectors＇ family. Items shown at the fair include Olympic torches, trophies and athlete suits,as well as pins, coins, stamps and other items bearing the Olympic rings. It is the first time the fair has been held in China and it has opened free to public visitors.

Microfluidic enrichment of small proteins from complex biological mixture on nanoporous silica chip

The growing field of miniaturized diagnostics is hindered by a lack of pre-analysis treatments that are capable of processing small sample volumes for the detection of low concentration analytes in a high-throughput manner. This letter presents a novel, highly efficient method for the extraction of low-molecular weight (LMW) proteins from biological fluids, represented by a mixture of standard proteins, using integrated microfluidic systems. We bound a polydimethylsiloxane layer patterned with a microfluidic channel onto a well-defined nanoporous silica substrate. Using rapid, pressure-driven fractionation steps, this system utilizes the size-exclusion properties of the silica nanopores to remove high molecular weight proteins while simultaneously isolating and enriching LMW proteins present in the biological sample. The introduction of the microfluidic component offers important advantages such as high reproducibility, a simple user interface, controlled environment, the ability to process small sample volumes, and precise quantification. This solution streamlines high-throughput proteomics research on many fronts and may find broad acceptance and application in clinical diagnostics and point of care detection.

From October 28 to 30, 2006 Taishan International Congress of Culture ＆ 1st Taishan Poetry Festival, co-organized by Center of International Cultural Exchange （CICE） and Tai＇an Municipal Government, took place in Taishan Mountain, venerated as ＂the most superior among the five sacred mountains in China＂. Cellular growth under hydrostatic pressure using bovine aortic EC-SMC co-cultured ePTFE vascular graft

High blood pressure (hypertension) is implicated in the development of atherosclerosis. Blood vessels are constantly subjected to stretch due to blood pressure and changes in stretch usually instigate adaptive vascular remodeling, including abnormal growth and proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) as well as extracellular matrix (ECM). In this experiment, we used bovine aortic endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells (EC-SMC) co-cultured ePTFE vascular grafts subjected to normal atmospheric pressure (as a control), and 100 mmHg hydrostatic pressure for 7 d. The increase of cell layer thickness was observed. When measured, the cell layer thickness increased by 116.2%. The increase of collagen (Type IV) synthesis was also observed in the immunohistochemistry assay. When stained with toluidine blue, the cells showed metachromatic phenomenon.
