数学在科学技术中的地位

我感谢天津市数学会,使我有机会向天津的学生和教师谈谈一个对所有国家都会引起强烈兴趣的题目:数学在科学技术中的地位。这一题目也许对正在迅猛发展的中国更有意义。这里我想同时就教学和科研两方面来谈。我是一个数学家,既是一名数学教师,也是一名研究工作者;因而我也有幸把数学的教学和科研这两种从不分离的活动充满激情地伴随我的一生。也许人们会以为我将鼓吹无论在大学还是中学,无论是教学中还是入学考试中,数学都应该是至高无上的;但是,恰恰相反,我认为只通过数学来选拔人才是非常危险的。无论是对于社会和对于个人来说,重要的是,教学应该给学生一种营养丰富的食     

不要强行改变孩子的性格——主持人语

年轻的父母每天都在接受新的信息，时间走到今天，单纯的学习成绩好，已经不能满足父母对孩子的期望。而与此同时，人际（人脉）关系越来越成为一个人迈向成功的重要条件。好的人际关系怎么来？理所当然的答案是来自一个人善于交际和沟通的外向性格。因此，改变孩子“闷葫芦”一样的内向性格，成为很多父母的新目标。     

Changes in stimulus salience as a result of stimulus preexposure: Evidence from aversive and appetitive testing procedures

In two experiments, rats received preexposure to three compound flavor stimuli, AX, BX, and CX, where X represents a saline solution. AX and BX were presented in alternation; CX, on a separate block of trials. The value of X was then modified, being devalued by aversive conditioning in Experiment 1, and rendered valuable by the induction of a state of salt need in Experiment 2. When given a choice between BX and CX, the rats consumed more of BX than of CX in Experiment 1, and more of CX than of BX in Experiment 2, suggesting that B and C differed in their ability to modulate the response governed by the X element. It was suggested that blocked preexposure to CX reduces the salience of the C stimulus but that the salience of B is maintained by preexposure in which BX is alternated with AX. The implications of this result for the phenomenon of perceptual learning are discussed.     

Validity of indirect assessment of writing competency for deaf and hard-of-hearing college students

Indirect tests of writing competency are often used at the college level for a variety of educational, programmatic, and research purposes. Although such tests may have been validated on hearing populations, it cannot be assumed that they validly assess the writing competency of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. This study used a direct criterion measure of writing competency to determine the criterion validity of two indirect measures of writing competency. Results suggest that the validity of indirect writing tests for deaf and hard-of-hearing baccalaureate-level students is weak. We recommend that direct writing tests be used with this population to ensure fair and accurage assessment of writing competency.     

Opinions among mandated reporters toward child maltreatment reporting policies

OBJECTIVE: This study investigates the opinions of social workers, pediatricians, and physician assistants in their support for the existing child maltreatment mandated reporting policy and an alternative reporting policy. Differences in professional training, age, gender, reporting behavior, attitudes towards reporting, and level of certainty needed to report were considered in determining which group of mandated reporters was most likely to support either the existing or an alternative policy. METHOD: A total of 382 social workers, pediatricians, and physician assistants in Connecticut and Massachusetts completed a self-report questionnaire. This sample represented an overall adjusted response rate of 76%. RESULTS: There was slightly more support for the existing reporting policy compared to the alternative policy. After controlling for age, attitudinal variables, and reporting behavior, social workers were significantly more likely to favor an alternative child maltreatment reporting policy than pediatricians or physician assistants. Also, those mandated reporters who had not consistently reported all suspected cases of maltreatment were significantly more likely to favor the alternative policy than consistent reporters. CONCLUSIONS: Because the majority of mandated reporters do not consistently report all suspected cases of maltreatment and support for an alternative reporting policy varies among different groups, consideration of alternative strategies and policies that address the concerns of different types of professionals may be appropriate.

将对瑞典大坝和溢洪道设计洪水的估算提出一种新指南。其重点是针对那些危险性较大的水坝。其方法是根据流域面积大小、季节和海拨高程等因素将地区设计降水系列作修改后,应用较完整的水文模型求设计洪水。水库的运行规则也是指南的一个基本部分。通过将设计降水系列系统地插入到十年气候实测资料中,再将初始的积雪用统计的30年积雪代替后,可找到产洪因子的最危险组合。新指南可应用于单一水库系统也可用于水库群所组成的较复杂的水电系统。既可适用融雪洪水也可适用暴雨洪水,以及两者混合的洪水。为了研究所求洪水的频率和避免地区的不协调性,将计算洪水与实测洪水进行了广泛的比较,还进行了频率分析。
