Global Models in Engineering Education: An Update

Engineers and scientists are becoming aware of the contributions they can make to society and of their responsibility to make these contributions. Global modeling offers a good introduction to problems of society and to solid technical challenges which can appeal to engineering students. Since many engineering professors are not well acquainted with global modeling, we have identified and report here the best possible references, models and accompanying computer programs, and simulation games. With these, teachers may become sufficiently familiar with the field to develop courses and collect resource materials for the students     

Test Interpretation Competence: A Comparison of Microskills and Mental Practice Training

To study the effects of behavioral versus mental rehearsal in acquiring test interpretation skills, we randomly assigned students in a counseling-related testing course to one of two training groups or to a delayed-control (DC) group. The treatment groups received identical instructions, modeling, feedback, and review of target skills but practiced in either a microskills (MS) or mental practice (MP) mode. Ratings of videotaped interviews of the MS and MP trainees did not differ but were superior to the DC group's ratings on measures of general counseling and test interpretation skills. Those in the MS group had more confidence in and perceived greater benefits from their training than did those in the MP group. Implications are discussed, and a suggestion is made for combining MS and MP training methods.     

Toward a Unified Consciousness Theory

Although research and personal experiences are indicating that telepathy, clairvoyance, psychokinesis, and healing may be more common than previously believed, human development continues to be viewed primarily from physical or cognitive frameworks. These traditional theories are not comprehensive enough to include many human phenomena. As a result many people label these phenomena as extrasensory or paranormal and presume that they exist in only rare cases, if at all. Counselors are not trained to recognize or deal with such phenomena. The beginning of a holistic theory that can treat paranormal phenomena as normal human development is presented. Implications for counseling, counselor education, and counselor supervision are discussed.     

Illustrated by Children

Art education has tended to omit illustration from any serious discussion in the curriculum. However, literacy educators now encourage the ‘reading’ of illustrations in picture books and scrutinise the relationship between word and image in child cognition. It is time art educators began to look at illustration seriously in the context of visual education.     

StoryTech: Exploring the Use of a Narrative Technique for Training Career Counselors

This article describes the use of a narrative technique, StoryTech, in a career counseling class. Student evaluations, comments, and recommendations for the use of StoryTech in a career counseling class are included.
