School Counselors as Supervisors: An Integrated Approach for Supervising School Counseling Interns

This article proposes an approach for supervising school counseling interns. The approach integrates supervisor roles, intern skills, and stages of the supervision process.     

Becoming a Mature Student: Gendered narratives of the self

This article explores some of the processes of personal and social transformation involved in becoming a mature student, through the construction of four narratives derived from the biographical accounts of 21 students entering higher education. The authors identify different conceptions of self in the four narratives and demonstrate their gendered nature. In particular they highlight the specifically masculine nature of the 'reflexive self', in contrast to the gender-neutral treatment of this concept in the literature. They also draw attention to the connections between these gendered concepts of self and the meanings of education, which they suggest are more complex than the simple gender dichotomies expressed in the literature. In addition they show that an analytic approach derived from narrative analysis can offer more insights into the interpretation of biographical data than more traditional ethnographic methods.     

Thinking Critically About Critical Thinking: an unskilled inquiry into Quinn and McPeck

Victor Quinn advocates teaching critical thinking as a curriculum subject. He has accused Professor John E. McPeck, a vehement critic of such proposals, not only of being wrong but also of being in need of such a critical thinking course himself. In this paper we examine the five supposed critical thinking weaknesses of which McPeck is accused and consider what Quinn's arguments tell us about critical thinking, its skills, its priorities and its claims to subject status.     

Strategies for Implementing Marriage and Family Counselor Training in Counselor Education Programs

Three models for implementing marriage and family counseling training are presented: community counseling, interdisciplinary, and Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Related conceptual and pragmatic issues are identified and discussed.     

Human Sexuality Instruction in Counselor Education Curricula

The authors sent a questionnaire assessing curricula on sexual counseling to chairpersons of all counselor education programs in the United States. Results show the current status of sexuality instruction for counselors.
