Critical Incidents Among Novice Counselor Trainees

The authors attempted to gain an understanding of critical incidents (CIs) from the perspective of novice counselor trainees during their 1st year of supervised clinical practicum. Journals kept by 9 trainees in master's‐level counseling programs were qualitatively analyzed using the discovery‐oriented research methodology (A. Mahrer, 1988). One hundred fifty‐seven CIs emerged in 5 major categories: (a) professional identity, (b) personal reactions, (c) competence, (d) supervision, and (e) philosophy of counseling. Implications of the findings are discussed for counselor development theory and research, as well as counselor training.     

Film as a ‘thoughtful’ medium for teaching history

This collective case study of teachers and students in two ninth-grade US history classes examines the role that films can play as a ‘thoughtful’ medium for teaching history. Specifically, the study focuses on the nature and range of authentic intellectual work that students are engaged in with film in the classroom (Newmann, F., B. King, and D. Carmichael. 2007. Authentic instruction and assessment: Common standards for rigor and relevance in teaching academic subjects. Des Moines, IA: Iowa Department of Education. http://centerforaiw.com/resources/center-aiw-materials). The findings contribute to the literature by challenging and extending current notions of pedagogy with a film, in particular, Hobbs' (2006. Non-optimal uses of video in the classroom. Learning, Media and Technology 31: 35–50) findings of ‘non-optimal’ use of video. In addition to using a film as simply a historical ‘text’ or visual textbook, students in these classes are engaged with the medium of film in developing conceptual knowledge and historical empathy and in the deliberation of controversial issues or historical events. The study also reveals a continued lack of critical analysis of films as a source and reveals the tension between ideology of ‘educational’ media and teacher practice with media.     

Understanding the use of Educational Technology Among Faculty, Staff, and Students at a Medical University

A college of health professions at a medical university located in the southeastern United States is striving to increase the use of educational technology among faculty, staff, and students. A strategic planning group was formed and charged with enhancing the use of educational technology within the college. In order to understand the current state of technology use, perceptions of technology, and training needs, surveys and focus groups were conducted. Based on the qualitative and quantitative data obtained, a conceptual model illustrating levels of technology use and factors that influence use was developed.

RESUMEN

El propósito de este estudio es evaluar la eficacia de la instrucción sistemática en las destrezas de estudio de textos de ciencias sociales. El grupo que siguió un entrenamiento sistemático rindió a un nivel significativamente más alto que el grupo control (sin instrucción) y que el grupo de comparación (que reproducía el método de las clases tradicionales), entre los que no hubo diferencias. También se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los grupos en el tiempo dedicado al estudio. La muestra entrenada disminuyó el tiempo de estudio sin disminuir su rendimiento. En el postest retardado, casi todos los estudiantes entrenados utilizaron algún tipo de estrategia, aunque no fuera exactamente el método de estudio en el que habían sido entrenados. En definitiva, se apoya el uso de la instrucción sistemática para enseñar un método de estudio a alumnos que presentan deficiencias en esta destreza.     

The effects of team training on team outcomes: A meta‐analysis

A meta‐analysis was conducted to determine relationships between team training and team effectiveness. Results from the 21 studies provided evidence that training is positively related to team effectiveness and effectiveness in five outcome categories: affective, cognitive, subjective task‐based skill, objective task‐based skill, and teamwork skill.

Child maltreatment and marijuana problems in young adults: Examining the role of motives and emotion dysregulation

It is well established that childhood maltreatment is an important predictor of marijuana use, but few studies have examined the mechanisms underlying this relationship. The current study examines marijuana motives as mediators of the relationship between childhood maltreatment and marijuana use in a sample of young adults. In addition, pathways from childhood maltreatment to emotion dysregulation, coping motives, and marijuana use were explored. Participants were 125 young adults (ages 19–25, 66.9% female) recruited through online community advertising. All participants completed questionnaires assessing childhood maltreatment, emotion dysregulation, marijuana motives, past year and past three-month marijuana use, and marijuana problems. Correlational analyses revealed bivariate relationships between childhood maltreatment, emotion dysregulation, marijuana motives and marijuana problems (rs = .24–.50). Mediation analyses revealed that coping motives mediated the relationship between childhood maltreatment and marijuana problems, and emotion dysregulation was associated with marijuana problems both directly and indirectly via coping motives. The present findings highlight emotion dysregulation and coping motives as important underlying mechanisms in the relationship between childhood maltreatment and marijuana problems.
