This paper reports an experimental study into the effects of cooperative and individualistic approaches in teaching Mathematics and English. The study was conducted at a Vacation Learning Camp (VLC) which was held for two weeks in one of the secondary schools in Singapore. This VLC was targeted at Secondary One pupils who were classified as below average based on general ability streaming.
The individualistic teaching approach was assumed to contribute to individual efforts while the cooperative teaching approach was expected to produce cooperativeness among the subjects. The results indicated that there were no significant differences in performances in the main effects classified as the treatment groups and the sex groups in both Mathematics and English; in Mathematics, the individualistic teaching approach was more effective for the male pupils whereas the cooperative teaching approach was more effective with females. However, in English, the results were reversed.
The female pupils in the cooperative group seemed to have improved in their attitude towards learning Mathematics whereas the male pupils in the individualistic group seemed to have a more positive attitude towards learning English. 相似文献
Mastery learning, it is claimed, is among the most successful practices in higher education. Evidence supporting this claim
has recently been criticized as empirically weak. This experiment employed a four-group, pre-post design to examine the learning
consequences of a computer-administered mastery-testing approach in comparison with a seminar-discussion approach in a third-year
university course. The mastery-testing approach generated significantly higher learning achievement than did the seminar-discussion
approach. Replication and extension of this research approach are recommended to support generalizations across mastery-testing

Problem solving is an important skill in the knowledge economy. Research indicates that the development of problem solving
skills works better in the context of instructional approaches centered on real-world problems. But students need scaffolding
to be successful in such instruction. In this paper I present a conceptual framework for understanding the effects of scaffolding.
First, I discuss the ultimate goal of scaffolding—the transfer of responsibility—and one way that scholars have conceptualized
promoting this outcome (fading). Next, I describe an alternative way to conceptualize transfer of responsibility through the
lens of distributed cognition and discuss how this lens informs how to promote transfer of responsibility. Then I propose
guidelines for the creation of problem solving scaffolds to support transfer of responsibility and discuss them in light of

This paper identifies the need for developing new ways to study curiosity in the context of today’s pervasive technologies
and unprecedented information access. Curiosity is defined in this paper in a way which incorporates the concomitant constructs
of interest and engagement. A theoretical model for curiosity, interest and engagement in new media technology-pervasive learning
environments is advanced, taking into consideration personal, situational and contextual factors as influencing variables.
While the path associated with curiosity, interest, and engagement during learning and research has remained essentially the
same, how individuals tackle research and information-seeking tasks and factors which sustain such efforts have changed. Learning
modalities for promoting this theoretical model are discussed leading to a series of recommendations for future research.
This article offers a multi-lens perspective on curiosity and suggests a multi-method research agenda for validating such

Given the important role of parent-youth communication in adolescent well-being and quality of life, we sought to examine the relationship between specific communication variables and youth perceived quality of life in general and as a deaf or hard-of-hearing (DHH) individual. A convenience sample of 230 youth (mean age = 14.1, standard deviation = 2.2; 24% used sign only, 40% speech only, and 36% sign + speech) was surveyed on communication-related issues, generic and DHH-specific quality of life, and depression symptoms. Higher youth perception of their ability to understand parents' communication was significantly correlated with perceived quality of life as well as lower reported depressive symptoms and lower perceived stigma. Youth who use speech as their single mode of communication were more likely to report greater stigma associated with being DHH than youth who used both speech and sign. These findings demonstrate the importance of youths' perceptions of communication with their parents on generic and DHH-specific youth quality of life. 相似文献
This study examined the impact of computer simulation and supported science learning on a teacher’s understanding and conceptual
knowledge of current electricity. Pre/Post tests were used to measure the teachers’ concept attainment. Overall, there was
a significant and large knowledge difference effect from Pre to Post test. Two interesting interactions were observed during
the data analysis. The first was the difference between Elementary and Secondary teachers. Both groups had significant gains,
with large effect sizes, but the Elementary teachers (Pre-Mean = 3.70, Post-Mean = 7.51) started lower and ended higher exhibiting
a significantly larger gain than the Secondary teachers (Pre-Mean = 4.96, Post-Mean = 6.71). The second interaction was the
impact of gender. Both groups showed significant gains, with large effect sizes, but females (Pre-Mean = 3.90, Post-Mean = 7.21)
gained significantly more than males (Pre-Mean = 5.13, Post-Mean = 7.01). These results confirm that computer simulation supported
science learning can have a positive effect on concept attainment in teachers. 相似文献
In this article, we report on a study of beliefs about mathematics, teaching, and proof conducted with six prospective secondary
mathematics teachers as they completed a two-semester sequence of a content course and a methods course. The initial beliefs
of the participants were identified using interview and survey data, and potential shifts in beliefs were examined through
further interview and survey data combined with classroom observations and written work. While their beliefs about mathematics
and proof appeared to be relatively stable, their beliefs about teaching shifted from a more teacher-centered view to beliefs
that foreground the activities and understandings of the students. These shifts are analyzed using the construct of belief
structures, and activities and events from the courses that may have facilitated the shifts are identified. The results are
consistent with the literature in some respects, such as the stability of the participants’ beliefs about mathematics. On
the other hand, our results present new information about how prospective secondary mathematics teachers’ beliefs about teaching
