Technology has the potential to facilitate the development of higher-order thinking skills in learning. There has been a rush towards online learning by education systems during COVID-19; this can therefore be seen as an opportunity to develop students’ higher-order thinking skills. In this short report we show how critical thinking and creativity can be developed in an online context, as well as highlighting the importance of grit. We also suggest the importance of heuristic evaluation in the design of online systems to support twenty-first century learning.

The relationship between the construct of mental attention and “giftedness” is not well established. Gifted individuals could
make effective use of their executive functions and this could be related to their mental attentional capacity. The dialectic
constructivist model developed by Pascual-Leone introduced the concept of mental attention or “effort”, relating it to mental
capacity. The aim of this study is to investigate whether the measurement of mental capacity (M-measurement) is differential
for a group of children with high IQs. 110 students between 4 and 18 years old participated in this study. Some were Gifted
(n=70) and others Non-Gifted (n=40). Wechsler-R Scale and the Figural Intersection Test were administered to all participants.
An interesting pattern was found in the younger groups. The gifted scored higher than the non-gifted in the Figural Intersection
Test and much higher than their theoretical M. The non-gifted scored quite close to their theoretical M (based on age). In
the oldest group, the gifted again achieved higher scores, but now they scored at the theoretical level, and the non-gifted

An interview and an intervention study are reported. Interview findings extend research on the positive relationship of parent involvement to school success. That is, although most of the low income families reported low-moderate participation, a postive relationship was found between parent involvement and school adjustment as early as kindergarten. With respect to negative valuing and barrier interpretations of low participation, the data support the latter; all but a few parents reported positive attitudes toward school involvement, while the majority indicated significant barriers. In comparing Latino and non-Latino groups, the former reported more barriers. Within the Latino group, parents whose children had made a good school adjustment indicated the most participation. Non-English proficient parents reported more barriers than those proficient in English but comparable degrees of involvement. In the intervention study, a simple strategy resulted in more treatment than control parents attending a school event. Differences in attendance were related to ethnicity and language.This work was carried out in conjunction with a dropout prevention demonstration project conducted as a collaborative effort of the School Mental Health unit (Janelle Munn, Director) and Dropout Prevention unit (Pete Martinez, Director) of the Los Angeles Unified School District and the School Mental Health Project at UCLA (Howard Adelman and Linda Taylor, Co-directors). Partial support for the project came from the U.S. Department of Education. AbstractThis article describes two collaborative research projects whose common goal was to explore the potential role of professional controversies in building teachers’ summative assessment capacity. In the first project, upper primary teachers were encouraged to compare their practices through a form of social moderation, without prior instructor input or theoretical preparation. In the second project, lower secondary school teachers were encouraged to compare their summative assessment practices with reference to a theoretical model of curriculum alignment, under the guidance of an instructor. The findings support the potentially constructive role of professional controversies in supporting teachers’ professional development for summative assessment. They highlight the status of references called upon in discussion of controversies, and their contribution to the construction of the subjects under discussion. 相似文献

This paper discusses the problem of discriminating between individual contributions in the assessment of group projects. It is argued that peer assessment is a necessary element of any proposed structure but that the use of any ‘weighting‐factor’ system is contrary to the philosophy underpinning collaborative groupwork. A structure that separates the process and product elements of the assessment is described and a set of generic criteria for the process peer assessment identified. This structure was implemented with a group of students at Hong Kong University and evaluated using questionnaires and in‐depth interviews. The paper discusses the results of this evaluation and in particular identifies the need for ‘benchmarking’ when using the criteria and also the problematic nature of the ‘insider‐outsider’ syndrome as an important cultural factor. 相似文献

Andean Indians have used coca leaves (Erythroxylon coca and related species) for centuries to enhance physical performance. The benefits and disadvantages of using coca leaf have
been a subject of many political debates. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of chewing coca leaves on biochemical
and physiological parameters. Cutaneous microdialysis catheters were used to estimate systemic biochemical changes. We subjected
10 healthy adult males (local residents) in Cajamarca (Peru, altitude 2700 m) to a standardised exercise routine on a stationary
cycle ergometer. The blood pressure, oxygen saturation (digital), pulse, VO2 max and ECG (Holter monitor) were recorded before
the exercise. Cutaneous microdialysis catheters were introduced in the forearm. The subjects were given to chew 8 g of coca
leaves with a small amount of lime. They were then placed on the cycle ergometer for 20 min. Blood pressure, oxygen saturation,
pulse, ECG and VO2 max were recorded. Pyruvate, glucose, lactate, glycerol and glutamate levels were estimated. Oxygen saturation,
blood pressure, and pulse rate did not show any significant changes between the two groups. Glucose levels showed hyperglycaemic
response. Glycerol, Lactate and Pyruvate increased. Glutamate remained unchanged. Similar changes were not seen in the controls.
These results suggest that coca leaves have blocked the glycolytic pathway of glucose oxidation resulting in accumulation
of glucose and pyruvate. The energy requirement for exercise is being met with beta-oxidation of fatty acids. The glycerol
released was also getting accumulated since its pathway for oxidation was blocked. These experimental findings suggest that
chewing coca leaves is beneficial during exercise and that the effects are felt over a prolonged period of sustained physical

There is a large body of research that has explored students’ misconceptions about science phenomena. Less research, however,
has been devoted to identifying teachers’ misconceptions, but the results of the few existing studies demonstrate that teachers
and students possess similar misconceptions. This study explored the physical science conceptions of 103 elementary science
teachers to determine whether, after three decades of misconception research, teachers still possess conceptions similar to
those held by students. We found that our teachers expressed misconceptions regarding gravity, magnetism, gases, and temperature
that were similar to common student misconceptions. Suggestions for improving science professional development programs are

The purpose of this research was (a) to determine whether there is a comparative difference in the level of conscious death anxiety between young-old and the old-old nursing home residents and (b) to assess the predictive value of educational attainment, gender, subjective health, functional ability, social support, and length of stay on the conscious death anxiety of the persons in the two age groups. A discriminant analysis of 228 residents from three nursing homes revealed that among the 103 young-old subjects poor subjective health, poor functional ability, poor social support, and extended stays in the facilities were indicative of high death anxiety. Among the 125 old-old subjects, high death anxiety was associated with poor subjective health, poor functional ability, and higher educational attainment. Further, it was found that age was an important variable. A significantly greater proportion of the older residents compared to the younger residents had higher conscious death anxiety. The results may direct practitioners and planners in program development for the elderly nursing home patient. 相似文献
