Recognition of Moving and Static Faces by Young Infants

This study compared 3- to 4-month-olds' recognition of previously unfamiliar faces learned in a moving or a static condition. Infants in the moving condition showed successful recognition with only 30 s familiarization, even when different images of a face were used in the familiarization and test phase (Experiment 1). In contrast, infants in the static condition showed successful recognition only when the familiarization duration was lengthened to 90 s and when the same image was used between the familiarization and test phase (Experiments 2 and 3). Furthermore, presentation of multiple static images of a face did not yield the same level of performance as the moving condition (Experiment 4). These results suggest that facial motion promotes young infants' recognition of unfamiliar faces.

THE INQUIRY SCIENCE IMPLEMENTATION SCALE: DEVELOPMENT AND APPLICATIONS

Instruments for evaluating the implementation of inquiry science in K-12 classrooms are necessary if evaluators and researchers are to know the extent to which programs are implemented as intended and the extent to which inquiry science teaching accounts for student learning. For evaluators and researchers to be confident about the quality of these instruments, information about their development and validation—particularly about teacher self-report instruments—must be available. In this article, we present the Inquiry Science Implementation Scale, describe the instrument’s development and the results of analyses of the validity and reliability of data collected with it, and discuss the possible uses of the instrument.

ABSTRACT

Eighteenth-century England saw a close association between personal decency and the condition, cleanliness and quality of underwear – this shirt or shift, usually made from linen, was used to judge status and respectability. Novels and a pawnbroker’s book reveal that inadequate underwear shamed its owner. Bodily intimacy had the potential to create emotional attachments, illustrated by the poignant Derwentwater sheet. However quantitative analysis of wills and textiles from the Foundling Hospital, which continues as the children’s charity Coram, indicate that bodily intimacy did not automatically create emotional meaning and economic value could have primacy over emotional attachment.
