Approaching functions: Cabri tools as instruments of semiotic mediation

Assuming that dynamic features of Dynamic Geometry Software may provide a basic representation of both variation and functional dependency, and taking the Vygotskian perspective of semiotic mediation, a teaching experiment was designed with the aim of introducing students to the idea of function. This paper focuses on the use of the Trace tool and its potentialities for constructing the meaning of function. In particular, starting from a dynamic approach aimed at grounding the meaning of function in the experience of covariation, the Trace tool can be used to introduce the twofold meaning of trajectory, at the same time global and pointwise, and leads students to grasp the notion of function.

Financing innovation: A bibliometric analysis of the field

This article presents a bibliometric analysis of the financing of innovation during the period 2001–2016. Among the most prominent journals in the field are Research Policy, Technovation and Small Business Economics; among the most influential authors are Petersen, Hall, Himmelberg, Lerner and Brown; and the most connected documents are those by Hall (2002) and Brown, Fazzari, and Petersen (2009). The field is fragmented and uses a variety of financial theoretical models. Salient topics in the field are financial constraints, funding sources (internal and external), capital structure, venture capital and financing of technology companies.     

Becoming business critical: Knowledge for Healthcare

Significant progress has been made in implementing Knowledge for Healthcare. This editorial reports the central contribution of effective partnerships and the involvement of librarians and knowledge specialists in this work. There are compelling business priorities. Key elements of work‐streams on demonstrating impact, workforce development and streamlining are indicated, along with areas of growing importance – knowledge management, embedded roles and health information for the public and patients. Knowledge, and the skills to help people to use it, are business critical.     

The quality of teaching and learning via videoconferencing

Now that videoconferencing is being widely used for the delivery of mass lectures between sites, there is concern that the quality of teaching and learning experienced, using this method of delivery, is not as good as that experienced in a traditional classroom situation. The study aimed to investigate this concern by using a research diary to collect information on classroom activities and cognitive outcomes which students at local and remote sites experienced over a ten–week period. The results indicated that remote site students did not experience the same quality of teaching and learning as local site students.
