Students enter physics classes with negative attitudes towards physics compared to the other sciences. Female students are more likely to opt out of a second higher-level physics course. Thus, the broad goal of this work is to better understand how to have the most lasting positive impact on female students’ attitudes and motivations towards learning physics after a single physics course in high school. Through longitudinal case studies of six female students using the frameworks of episodic memory and physics identity, we explore the most impactful features of students’ high school physics experiences. The data is drawn from three years of student interviews and one initial student survey. Our results indicate that the students could remember in detail and with longevity their experiences with physics causing high arousal and negative initial valence, such as teachers presenting physics knowledge in a counter-intuitive way. The students can remember the context but not the details of their experiences with physics causing low arousal and non-neutral valence, such as their teacher sharing a story about physics. Experiences that were eventually tied to positive valence had positive impacts on female students’ physics identity maintenance, such as problem solving activities where no one was left behind. 相似文献

This article empirically tests a previously developed theoretical framework for mathematics identity based on students’ beliefs. The study employs data from more than 9,000 college calculus students across the United States to build a robust structural equation model. While it is generally thought that students’ beliefs about their own competence in mathematics directly impact their identity as a “math person,” findings indicate that students’ self‐perceptions related to competence and performance have an indirect effect on their mathematics identity, primarily by association with students’ interest and external recognition in mathematics. Thus, the model indicates that students’ competence and performance beliefs are not sufficient for their mathematics identity development, and it highlights the roles of interest and recognition. 相似文献

The technology acceptance model (TAM) has been widely used to study user acceptance of new computer technologies. However, it does not incorporate social structure and influence as a significant factor. In this study, we ask the following questions: (i) What are the limitations of the existing TAM for studying virtual community? (ii) What is effect of social networks on user acceptance of technology for virtual community? and (iii) How can the influence of different types of social ties serve as a basis for exploring the user acceptance of technology in a virtual community? Here, we explore the possibility for extending TAM to incorporate the influence of the different types of social ties as a new theoretical construct. Preliminary analysis of data from a virtual community results show that weak and strong ties influence technology acceptance. The findings enable HCI researchers to account for influence of social ties in future investigations using TAM. 相似文献

Oxidative stress is implicated in the etiopathogenesis of a variety of human diseases. Therefore, in the present study, erythrocyte
lipid peroxidation, percentage hemolysis, antioxidant enzymes viz., glutathione reductase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide
dismutase and plasma antioxidants viz., ceruloplasmin, vitamins A,E and C have been determined in 19 patients with tubercular
meningitis (TBM) and 50 normals. Six patients who were treated with antibiotics were considered for the follow up. The statistical
analysis was carried out by Mann Whitney U test and Wilcoxon rank sum test. Lipid peroxidation (P<0.02), percentage hemolysis
(P<0.001) and plasma ceruloplasmin (P<0.0001) of TBM patients were significantly higher, whereas erythrocyte glutathione reductase
(P<0.05) and plasma antioxidant vitamins A, E and C (P<0.01, P<0.05 respectively) were significantly lower than those of the
controls. In the follow up patients the glutathione reductase and catalase levels were significantly high (P<0.05) compared
to their pre-treated condition. Vitamin C and E levels have attained normal range. This study indicated that the blood antioxidant
status of TBM patients which was low compared to controls improved after treatment, suggesting the role of free radicals in
