The typology of organizational effectiveness in Australian higher education

This paper briefly summarizes the new developments emerging from a major ongoing research program in Australia in higher education that tested and extended Cameron's dimensions of organizational effectiveness. Framed in this context, the paper then reports on the second national study in Australia to replicate earlier findings. The results confirm earlier findings and unequivocally establish the four-group typology that existed until recently. Finally, discussion includes consideration of micro and macro benefits of the framework with particular emphasis on recent structural changes to the Australian higher education system with reference to organizational culture and quality standards.This paper was prepared during a recent period as visiting professor in the School of Business at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada.

针对当前大学物理实验数据处理的教学现状,开展了计算机软件处理实验数据和辅助大学物理实验课程的教学研究。通过教学实践,总结了Excel、Origin、和MATLAB三种软件在大学物理实验实际教学中的特点、应用效果和以及存在的问题。研究发现,计算机辅助大学物理实验有利于实验教学,能够激发学生的实验兴趣。     

SEEK Web tutor: fostering a critical stance while exploring the causes of volcanic eruption

We investigated the impact of a Web tutor on college students’ critical stance and learning while exploring Web pages on science. Critical stance is an aspect of self-regulated learning that emphasizes the need to evaluate the truth and relevance of information as the learner engages in systematic inquiry to answer challenging questions. The Web tutor is called SEEK, an acronym for Source, Evidence, Explanation, and Knowledge. The SEEK Tutor was designed to promote a critical stance through several facilities in a computer environment: spoken hints on a mock Google™ search page, on-line ratings on the reliability of particular Web sites, and a structured note-taking facility that prompted them to reflect on the quality of particular Web sites. We conducted two experiments that trained students how to take a critical stance and that tracked their behavior while exploring Web pages on plate tectonics to research the causes of the volcanic eruption of Mt. St. Helens. The SEEK Tutor did improve critical stance, as manifested in essays on the causes of the volcanic eruption, and did yield learning gains for some categories of information (compared with comparison conditions). However, many measures were unaffected by either the presence of the SEEK Tutor or by prior training on critical stance. We anticipate that robust improvements on critical stance and learning will require more training and/or some expert feedback and interactive scaffolding of critical stance in the context of specific examples. This work was conducted while Tenaha O’Reilly was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Memphis.     

Improving the efficiency of dialogue in tutoring

The current studies investigated the efficient use of dialogue in intelligent tutoring systems that use natural language interaction. Such dialogues can be relatively time-consuming. This work addresses the question of how much dialogue is needed to produce significant learning gains. In Experiment 1, a full dialogue condition and a read-only control condition were compared with a mixed dialogue condition in which students engaged in full dialogue for half the problems followed by problems requiring only a limited engagement. We found that the mixed dialogue condition produced results as impressive as the full dialogue condition and took less time. Experiment 2 replicated these findings and further examined issues of time engaged in learning, quality of instruction, and learning gains. Overall, these results show that dialogue-based intelligent tutoring systems could be designed in a more efficient manner to maximize learning and minimize the cost of time-on-task.

对《四库全书总目》小说家的序文存在的问题进行辩正,指出：张衡《西京赋》“小说九百,本自虞初”之“小说”专指《虞初周说》一种;以《虞初周说》为立论的基础不能成立;《汉志》小说家注云“依托也”的作品,其产生的时期在《汉志》那里并不清楚;不能靠《虞初周说》一家作品的篇数之多来推断小说的创作“特盛于虞初”,还应充分考虑从事小说创作的作者是否较多。     

通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构的方式初探

文章受进化论的启发,提出通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构的设想,分析了区域经济结构调整过程中“门槛”设置的成本和必要性,为了克服区域政府在通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构中可能会出现的政府失灵和政府俘获问题,提出了打造有效政府的思路.

This article presents a way of approaching introductory design education that expands student creativity through building on research related to the impact of cognitive development and metacognitive thinking. The strategy presented emphasises the importance of encouraging divergent thinking and understanding how students perceive knowledge. The goal is to create a learning environment that acknowledges where students are in their thinking and provides a structure that promotes both cognitive and creative growth.
