Democratic Education and Critical Pedagogy

Critical pedagogy wraps itself in the mantle of democracy, but in six generally accepted attributes of democracy (equality, important knowledge, nature of authority, inclusiveness, participatory decisionmaking, and rights and a seventh, not normally considered but one that has been the essence of the democratic dream—an optimum environment for everyone), critical pedagogy offers no direction. In fact, critical pedagogy, despite its unrelenting assault on the oppressiveness of schooling, may be guilty of diversion, division, illusion, and confusion, which are the major thrusts of oppression in a democratic society. Unlike critical pedagogy, a general theory of education informed by the seven aforementioned attributes of democracy provides multiple avenues for initiation of significant and realistic educational reform in existing public school sites.

中国画基础教学在传授基本理论和基本技巧的同时,应注重对学生创作意识的培养,保护和发挥其自由个性,指导他们正确理解和处理生活与技巧的关系,深入生活,精研技能,调动思维,展开想象,创造出鲜活生动富有典型和表现力的艺术形象。总之,在实际教学过程中,对生活、技巧和创作诸要素进行合理的配置,调整好教学状态,是提高学生的综合素质,造就优秀的美术教育人才的重要步骤与条件。     

Rejoinder to D. Brent Edwards Jr. and His Interpretation of Our Position on Democratic Education and Social Justice

We review our involvement in social justice movements and projects over the past half-century that led to our understanding of importance of democracy. We contrast our understanding based on our extensive involvement in schools, our record of accomplishments from national and state legislation. e.g., “New Careers” projects, task forces in Australian state schools, to successful inclusion of the excluded into higher education, e.g.,. Upward Bound and HEP with Critical Pedagogy which at least from its most prominent advocates is mostly talk, little action. We contrast our testable democratic theory with clearly articulated principles with Critical Pedagogy efforts to impose “truth.”

对《四库全书总目》小说家的序文存在的问题进行辩正,指出：张衡《西京赋》“小说九百,本自虞初”之“小说”专指《虞初周说》一种;以《虞初周说》为立论的基础不能成立;《汉志》小说家注云“依托也”的作品,其产生的时期在《汉志》那里并不清楚;不能靠《虞初周说》一家作品的篇数之多来推断小说的创作“特盛于虞初”,还应充分考虑从事小说创作的作者是否较多。     

一种新型实用的索书号结构之探讨

基于长期从事图书标引与检索工作的实践,就目前广泛采用的几种用于图书标引与检索的索书号结构进行比较．介绍一种新型的索书号结构,即“分类号＋书名＋著者＋出版年月＋N位容量码”的组合索书号结构。     

通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构的方式初探

文章受进化论的启发,提出通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构的设想,分析了区域经济结构调整过程中“门槛”设置的成本和必要性,为了克服区域政府在通过设置“门槛”调控区域经济结构中可能会出现的政府失灵和政府俘获问题,提出了打造有效政府的思路.     

Select-a-Kibitzer: A Computer Tool that Gives Meaningful Feedback on Student Compositions

Select-a-Kibitzer is a computerized tool that gives feedback to students on their compositions in a unique way. The feedback is based on composition research which describes the process of writing as one of simultaneously solving multiple, possibly conflicting, constraints. In Select-a-Kibitzer, each constraint is personified by a different character. A student enters a composition into the tool and then asks for feedback. A variety of natural language processing techniques are used to analyze the text. Then, each of the characters gives feedback on the text from its particular point of view. Select-a-Kibitzer differs greatly from standard “style checker” mechanisms that focus on surface features of the text. By using Latent Semantic Analysis, Select-a-Kibitzer can address a wide range of meaning-oriented composition issues, including coherence, purpose, topic, and overall quality. This paper describes the composition research that forms the basis of the projec t, and the interaction and implementation of Select-a-Kibitzer. It focuses on techniques for using LSA to provide feedback about the meaning of the composition.     

杭州市女性体育健身活动情况调查

运用问卷调查、文献资料调研和数理统计等方法 ,对杭州市女性体育健身活动情况进行调研。结果发现 :大部分女性参加体育健身活动 ;她们参加体育健身活动的动机呈多层次、多元化 ;选择的项目、形式、场所都带有明显的年龄特征 ;家务重、工作忙、无时间或本身不喜欢是影响她们参加体育健身活动的主要因素。
