Attention deficit disorders: characteristics,assessment, and interventions

ABSTRACT

In the United States, there is an increasing prevalence of children who are diagnosed with an attention deficit disorder (ADD). The essential features of ADD are developmentally inappropriate degrees of inattention, impulsivity, and motor hyperactivity. The rate of prevalence could differ in other countries depending on the definition of the condition. This article will review related research in the United States about ADD which will include the following topics: differential diagnosis and assessment, treatment, interventions, and parent training. The overlap of ADD with other handicaps will be described as well as assessment techniques such as interviews, rating scales, and observations. Studies of the efficacy of medication, educational interventions, cognitive‐behavioral strategies, and parent training are reviewed. In the conclusion, suggestions for further research are outlined which may further assist youngsters with ADD to adjust at school, in the home, and in the community.     

A THEOLOGICAL METHOD FOR ADULT EDUCATION ROOTED IN THE WORKS OF TRACY AND LONERGAN

While the academic debate on whether the hermeneutical methodology of David Tracy is compatible with, complementary to, or antithetical to the theological method outlined by Bernard Lonergan, one program‐‐die Loyola Institute for Ministry Extension Program (LIMEX)‐‐has drawn aspects of its educational methodology from both sources for more than seventeen years. This essay presents an overview of how LIMEX has adapted Tracy's and Lonergan's methodologies into a synthesis that highlights the strengths of both approaches.     

A Strategy for Evaluating District Developed Assessments for State Accountability

As part of Nebraska's assessment and accountability system, districts' local assessment systems are evaluated for their psychometric quality. This article provides an overview of a two-stage evaluation strategy, discusses how it was applied in Nebraska, and presents results from the first three years of the evaluation process. Benefits of the method include an emphasis on formative evaluation and promotion of improved assessment quality at the local level. A limitation of the model is the inability to make refined comparisons of student performance across districts on the assessments. Results from the first three years suggest that greater specificity in the review criteria and additional reviewer calibration activities are needed.

Child‐centered Practice in Museums: Experiential Learning through Creative Play at the Ipswich Art Gallery

Over the past two decades, museums and galleries have significantly expanded the scope and diversity of programs and exhibitions offered to children, families and schools. Parents and teachers are increasingly interested in curated public play spaces for children in the early years (from birth to eight years old), and they actively search for accessibility, affordability and quality when planning young children's excursions. In 2013, the Ipswich Art Gallery (in Queensland, Australia) developed and presented Light Play, an interactive exhibition designed especially for children up to the age of eight. Light Play promoted the use of light as a creative material for making ephemeral art through collaborative play, experimentation and discovery‐based learning. As part of the exhibition, a formal research project was run as an integral component of Light Play. Our research documented the qualities that lead to successful creative play experiences for young children in art museums by examining three key aspects of the exhibition: the participants, the environment, and the program. This paper discusses the findings of that research, in relation to making financial and human resource investments in interactive and immersive exhibitions and play spaces for children in the early years.     

Student voices: Re-conceptualising and re-positioning Australian library and information science education for the twenty-first century

This paper reports on the preliminary research findings of the sub-study group of a larger undertaking, the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) priority project Re-conceptualising and Re-positioning Australian Library and Information Science Education for the Twenty-first Century. It examines student experiences of library and information science (LIS) education across both the tertiary and vocational education sectors in Australia. The student sub-study group’s task was to provide the student/recent graduate perspective on LIS education in Australia. The research considered four major themes to find out how students and recent graduates felt about LIS education in Australia. The themes were: learning opportunities; learner attributes; learning experiences; and learner outcomes. In the second half of 2010, self-administered anonymous web questionnaires and focus groups were used to explore issues such as student demographics, socio-economic backgrounds, past experiences, expectations and rationale behind course choices. In addition the destinations of graduates were explored. Key findings suggest there are various pathways that students take to achieve a LIS qualification in Australia; students are generally optimistic about the future of the LIS profession, and consider that technology will continue to play a key role in future career options; they stress the importance of practical workplace experiences as part of course structure; their satisfaction levels with current courses are high and students feel confident they have been provided with the skills required to begin their professional life.
