This sub‐study is part of a longitudinal naturalistic investigation monitoring the social behaviour of young children (3‐8‐year‐olds) before and after the arrival of broadcast television in St Helena, South Atlantic.

Children's free‐play behaviour in first school playgrounds was videotaped in 1994 (pre‐tv), and in 1995 and 1996 (post‐tv), and then coded and analysed by trained observers. Findings showed no significant differences in children's behaviour either across the availability of broadcast television (i.e. CNN) or with the addition of further channels (CNN plus others).  相似文献

In light of growing concerns in the public and recent mandates from business program accrediting bodies and curricular task forces, the importance of teaching ethical topics in information systems programs is discussed. Innovative strategies used for teaching the application of ethical criteria to common situations are reviewed. Results of a survey of information systems faculty members in the US are presented and are compared to previous studies that related primarily to computer science and software engineering programs. Insight is provided into the topics, techniques, degree of coverage, and assessment techniques currently used when teaching ethics in computing-related programs. Inflections may be interpolated into signed sequences by adding fingerspelled English inflectional morphemes to signs and fingerspelling irregular forms in which the bound morpheme is changed (grapheme modified signing), or by introducing signs corresponding to the major English inflections which can be associated with existing or newly coined bound morphemes (systematically inflected signing). The SIS method may be much less complex than GMS if it does not attempt to provide cues to the spoken form, or it may be painstakingly matched to the production features of speech at the risk of increasing its complexity. Further knowledge on the extent to which inflected signs may be systematized and on the extent to which integration of SIS and GMS may be desirable is contingent upon research into the production, decoding and ease of learning parameters of gestural communication.  相似文献

There is scant research concerned about punishment of handicapped, minority students in public schools. The purpose of this study was to investigate race and gender, types of rules violations, types of punishments, referral rates, referral frequencies, and follow-up activities to determine differences in treatment by race, sex, and handicapping condition. The sample consisted of 4,391 discipline files representing records from 9 schools in a district (K-12). All data were analyzed using the Chi Square statistic. It was demonstrated that racial bias existed in the administration of punishment, and that Black, male handicapped students were punished more severely than others for commission of the same offenses.  相似文献

The results of a survey of secondary English Shakespeare teaching in one local education authority are reported. Centralised control of curriculum content in English is discussed in relation to findings about how much Shakespeare teaching is done and which plays teachers selected. The suggestion is made that recent controversy about content direction has deflected attention from the more important issues of methods of teaching and in‐service education.  相似文献

Cognitive experiments with the deaf designed to establish the independence of thought and language have usually disregarded their subjects’ exposure to special programs of instruction in English at School. This might be justified by assuming that language instruction produces isolated, esoteric knowledge which remains unintegrated into the child's functioning. The present experiment sought evidence of language knowledge in deaf children extending beyond formal instruction, and consequently suggestive of a functional, generative language system. It was found that deaf children had made considerable progress in assigning grammatical relationships according to Chomsky's (1969) Minimal Distance Principle (MDP) in complex sentences with regular illocutionary verbs. There was also some evidence of progress with the exceptional verb promise which disposes relationships in violation of the MDP. These findings cast doubt on the validity of testing the thought: language relationship by indiscriminate use of deaf subjects and in the absence of language measures.  相似文献

This paper describes an evidence‐based quality assurance system for teaching and learning, which takes as its starting point a well‐researched theoretical perspective on student learning in higher education. We argue this explicit use of a relevant theoretical base promotes coherence between quality assurance and improvement processes. We outline the principal features of our university's quality assurance strategy, systems and processes, and describe how the university's teaching quality assurance policy and systems have been implemented. We then consider the extent to which the project has achieved its goals of fostering an evidence‐based approach to teaching consistent with the student learning perspective on which the policy and systems are based. We also present data on student learning experiences showing reliable changes in the quality of the student learning experience. We discuss the applied significance of these changes, with a particular focus on changes in the experiences of commencing first year university students.  相似文献
