Hospital librarians in Naval Medical Centers and Naval Hospitals provide information to support the physicians, nurses, psychologists, chaplains, dentists, and corpsmen on ships and on Navy bases worldwide. The concept of "operational readiness" refers to the training required by Navy personnel during peacetime to perform war-time missons. Navy medical librarians receive challenging requests. Providing information electronically through full text, electronic main, and fax, is part of the routine when preparing staff to deploy to other countries and when supporting them in the field and on ships. Librarians at Naval Medical Center, San Diego help prepare Navy Healthcare providers for operations during combat, humanitarian, and peacekeeper missions. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of self-evaluative standards and graphed feedback on calibration accuracy
and performance in mathematics. Specifically, we explored the influence of mastery learning standards as opposed to social
comparison standards as well as of individual feedback as opposed to social comparison feedback. 90 fifth grade students were
randomly assigned to experimental and control groups. We conducted analyses for both the complete sample and an at-risk group
of low performing students who overestimate their skills. Self-evaluative standards had no effect on calibration accuracy
and performance. Students who received feedback were more accurate in their self-evaluative judgements than students who received
neither type of feedback. In overconfident students, feedback additionally increased prediction accuracy and, albeit marginally,
performance. We discuss the educational implications of our findings with respect to the relevance of standards and feedback
for promoting self-regulated learning within regular classroom settings. 相似文献

This article describes the development of a flipped classroom instructional module designed by librarians to teach first- and second-year medical students how to search the literature and find evidence-based articles. The pre-class module consists of an online component that includes reading, videos, and exercises relating to a clinical case. The in-class sessions, designed to reinforce important concepts, include various interactive activities. The specifics of designing both components are included for other health sciences librarians interested in presenting similar instruction. Challenges encountered, particularly in the live sessions, are detailed, as are the results of evaluations submitted by the students, who largely enjoyed the online component. Future plans are contingent on solving technical problems encountered during the in-class sessions. 相似文献

In 1990/91, a research study was undertaken in England on the Factors Affecting Schools’ Success in Producing Engineers and
Scientists (FASSIPES). This study was conducted by Brian Woolnough at the Oxford University Department of Educational Studies,
in conjunction with the Institute of Physics and the Institution of Electrical Engineers and National Power (Woolnough, 1991,
1994; Woolnough et al., 1997). Principally, Woolnough attempted to ascertain why young people chose to pursue a career in
the physical sciences and engineering. In addition, characteristics of schools which appeared to influence students to pursue
a study of science were investigated. A number of countries have since replicated this study as an international research
cooperative and the National Key Centre for School Science and Mathematics, Curtin University of Technology, Perth, Western
Australia participated on behalf of Australia. Currently, the following countries have contributed to FASSIPES International

Despite widespread dissatisfaction with the quality of scientific information employed in planning and policy-making in public agencies, relatively little is known about the scientific information acquisition behaviors of public managers. The purpose of this paper is to facilitate research on scientific information acquisition in public agencies by suggesting that: (1) planning and policy-making are ‘policy technologies’ and share certain attributes with more traditional technologies; (2) many propositions developed in the literature on information flows in R&D labs are, therefore, helpful in structuring thinking about information flows in public agencies; and (3) it may be possible self-consciously to design social and organizational structures so as to enhance informal flows of scientific information. After gleaning some of the propositions concerning scientific information flows from the R&D management literature, an ‘ideal design’ approach is employed to develop a model in which the social and organizational structures of a public agency optimize scientific information flow. 相似文献

In a previous study [Schwartz et al. (2005). Written Language and Literacy, 8, 179–207] we showed that early literacy in Russian (L1) facilitated decoding acquisition in Hebrew (L2) among Russian-Hebrew
first graders. The present study examined two alternative explanations for this finding. The first account concerns the general
benefits of an early start in literacy. The second relates to the specific meta-linguistic insights engendered by early exposure
to a fully fledged orthography—Russian. We therefore compared two groups who had acquired literacy prior to the onset of schooling:
bi-literate bilinguals (Russian L1 literates and Hebrew L2 learners) (n = 26) and early-literacy monolinguals (Hebrew-speaking monolinguals) (n = 18). The research was conducted in two stages. First, linguistic, meta-linguistic and cognitive tasks in Hebrew were administered
to all children and in Russian to the bilinguals at the beginning of the first grade. Next, reading and writing skills in
Hebrew were assessed at the end of the first grade. Bi-literate bilinguals showed superior levels of phonological awareness
on an initial phoneme isolation task in Hebrew compared to other three groups. In addition, the bi-literate bilinguals were
found to be superior to the early-literacy monolinguals on measures of word and pseudoword accuracy, which are known to depend
heavily on phonological processing efficiency, but not on fluency and spelling measures, which are more reliant on stored
orthographic information. This pattern of outcomes was attributed to the facilitating effects of an orthography characterized
by a fully fledged alphabet, in contrast to Hebrew’s primarily consonantal orthography, as well as the complex syllabic structure

Many previous time allocation studies treat work as a single activity and examine trade-offs between work and other activities. This paper investigates the at-work allocation of time among teaching, research, grant writing and service by science and engineering faculty at top US research universities. We focus on the relationship between tenure (and promotion) and time allocation, and we find that tenure and promotion do affect the allocation of time. The specific trade-offs are related to particular career paths. For example, full professors spend increasing time on service at the expense of teaching and research while longer-term associate professors who have not been promoted to full professor spend significantly more time teaching at the expense of research time. Finally, our results suggest that women, on average, allocate more hours to university service and less time to research than do men. 相似文献

The secondary school version of the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction (QTI) was adapted for the elementary school level and administered to 1 512 Singaporean students in 39 mathematics classes. The QTI is based on a two-dimensional model of influence (dominance-submission) and proximity (cooperation-opposition). Data supported each scale's internal consistency reliability, ability to predict student achievement, and ability to differentiate between the perceptions of students in different classrooms. 相似文献

The present study filled some gaps in past learning environment research in that, first, it involved the development of a new instrument tailor-made specifically for use in computer-assisted learning (CAL) classrooms and, second, it provided one of the rare examples of an evaluation of computer-assisted learning based on its impact on the nature of a classroom learning environment as perceived by students. In addition, the research was conducted in the unique milieu of the Singapore school system, and it investigated associations between students' outcomes and the classroom environment in computer-assisted learning settings. 相似文献
