Many studies have identified the classroom as an arena for the construction of gender and sexuality. Yet there has been relatively little attention to the role of teachers here, or to the deeper dynamics of teachers' constructions of gender and sexuality in the classroom. This article attempts to address these issues, examining the perpetuation of (sexist) heterosexual norms in the classroom by male teachers. Drawing on data from fieldwork in primary and secondary schools, the article examines the various ways in which men teachers use discourses of gender and sexuality to construct their masculinity. It is argued that the construction of masculinity involves drawing on misogynist and homophobic discourses, which can manifest in sexual harassment. The article reflects on the problematic aspects of heterosexual desire, and concludes with some suggestions for policy and practice. 相似文献

This study examined the relative contributions of phonological awareness, orthographic pattern recognition, and rapid letter
naming to fluent word and connected-text reading within a dyslexic sample of 123 children in second and third grades. Participants
were assessed on a variety of fluency measures and reading subskills. Correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses
were carried out to explore these relationships. The results demonstrate that phonological awareness, rapid letter naming,
and orthographic pattern recognition contribute to word-reading skills. Furthermore, rapid naming, orthographic pattern recognition,
and word reading fluency moderately predict different dimensions of connected-text reading (i.e., rate, accuracy, and comprehension)
whereas phonological awareness contributes only to the comprehension dimension of connected-text reading. The findings support
the multidimensional nature of fluency in which the whole is more than its parts. 相似文献

The symbolic violence of setting: A Bourdieusian analysis of mixed methods data on secondary students’ views about setting 下载免费PDF全文

‘Setting’ is a widespread practice in the UK, despite little evidence of its efficacy and substantial evidence of its detrimental impact on those allocated to the lowest sets. Taking a Bourdieusian approach, we propose that setting can be understood as a practice through which the social and cultural reproduction of dominant power relations is enacted within schools. Drawing on survey data from 12,178 Year 7 (age 11/12) students and discussion groups and individual interviews with 33 students, conducted as part of a wider project on secondary school grouping practices, we examine the views of students who experience setting, exploring the extent to which the legitimacy of the practice is accepted or challenged, focusing on students’ negative views about setting. Analyses show that privileged students (White, middle class) were most likely to be in top sets whereas working‐class and Black students were more likely to be in bottom sets. Students in the lowest sets (and boys, Black students and those in receipt of free school meals) were the most likely to express negative views of setting and to question the legitimacy and ‘fairness’ of setting as a practice, whereas top‐set students defended the legitimacy of setting and set allocations as ‘natural’ and ‘deserved’. This paper argues that setting is incompatible with social justice approaches to education and calls for the foregrounding of the views of those who are disadvantaged by the practice as a tool for challenging the doxa of setting. 相似文献
