The Texas public library trustee

Public Library trustees in Texas resemble trustees nationally in that they are appointed primarily by a public official or governing body; they see their major duties connected with decisions on policies, funding, and librarian employment; their tenures are short (the majority five years or less); and they attend monthly meetings. Differences from the national scene exist in the areas of sex distribution (the majority are women); membership in national and state trustee organizations (very low for Texas); presence of formal bylaws (94–5 percent of libraries); and education (lightly regarded for both new and continuing trustees).     

Social Motivation in the Classroom: implications for students’ achievement

Attributional rules that govern students’ self‐presentation tactics in school situations are presented. Recent research is reviewed that shows how children learn to strategically manipulate their teachers’ and classmates’ social responses toward themselves by varying their public accounts of achievement failures and successes. The implications of changing social dynamics on students’ achievement motivation and school behavior are discussed.     

Foster Mother–Infant Bonding: Associations Between Foster Mothers' Oxytocin Production,Electrophysiological Brain Activity,Feelings of Commitment,and Caregiving Quality

This study examined the biological processes associated with foster mother–infant bonding. In an examination of foster mother–infant dyads (N = 41, mean infant age = 8.5 months), foster mothers' oxytocin production was associated with their expressions of behavioral delight toward their foster infant and their average P3 response to images of all infant faces in the first 2 months of the relationship. Three months later, foster mothers' oxytocin production was still associated with delight toward their foster infant and was also specifically associated with their P3 response to an image of their foster infant. Similar to biologically related mothers and infants, oxytocin appears to be associated with foster mothers' brain activity and caregiving behavior, with patterns suggestive of bond formation.
