Recognising and managing pupils with mental health difficulties: teachers' views and experiences on working with educational psychologists in schools

The role and future directions of the educational psychology services are being re‐examined and there is a drive to build a more integrated system of services for children and young people that incorporates education, health and social care. This qualitative study examines teacher’s perspectives on their professional involvement with educational psychology services. The results indicate that while it was clear that educational psychologists are highly valued by teachers, there are a number of issues that teachers believe constrain service provision. We suggest that greater cross‐system consultation is needed in order to more closely examine how the roles of professionals working in education, health and social care services impact on each other.     

INTERNATIONAL TRANSFER OF SCIENTIFIC AND TECHNICAL NFORMATION

Kenneth Frazier's call for avoiding the “Big Deal,” an aggregation of journals that publishers offer as a one-price, one-size-fits-all package, has won some converts. Concerns exist over the inclusion of titles in aggregated packages that are neither wanted nor used by library patrons and the financial impact those titles are having on library budgets. Most libraries, particularly smaller and medium-sized institutions, perceive great benefit from the aggregated packages. OhioLINK has succeeded in negotiating license agreements that allow for annual reductions by selecting titles in the packages for discontinuation. The Big Deal is continuing to evolve, even as it begins to fade away.

Rethinking the Globalization Movement: Toward a Cultural Theory of Contemporary Democracy and Communication

How can we understand and evaluate the relationship between democracy and recent global protests in response to economic globalization? Criticisms of this type of activism understand democratic communication to be primarily a public process. I argue that instead, we need to develop a more fully cultural understanding of democracy and communication, one which would take into account important characteristics of contemporary democratic practice and experience. That is, as a resonant but unstable compound of meanings, democracy is integrated into individual subjectivities and collective identities through a whole variety of lived experiences, particularly in relation to mediated and symbolic practice.     

Librarianship and Information Science in The Sahel 1966–1999: An Annotated Bibliography

This work is an annotated bibliography that consists of articles, books, conference papers, dissertations, reports, etc., published in various library and information science forums on the subject of librarianship in the Sahel.The Encyclopaedia Britannica Online defines the term Sahel as an English translation of the Arab termSahil which refers to the semi-arid region of western and north-central Africa extending from Senegal to The Sudan. The Sahel for the purposes of this work consists of the region of West Africa and the nations of Gambia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Nigerian library literature will be given a full and separate treatment in two subsequent articles.While this work is by no means an exhaustive analysis of the entire Sahelian library, literature, it does strive to be comprehensive in terms of its country-by-country breakdown of librarianship within the region. In providing a citation for a non-English language work, the English equivalent of the title of that work will be given next to the non-English title.
