The periodical literature of demography and Bradford's law

This paper presents a statistical analysis of the journals and papers abstracted in Population Index, 1984. A Bradford distribution is fitted to the papers in all the journals regularly scanned by Population Index, as well as in the journals specifically designated as demography. The fit of these distributions, and in particular the second one, is remarkably close. A core of journals for demography is identified. A breakdown of the journals and the papers published in them by the journal's field is presented and discussed. Data on the distribution of journals by country of publication are also given. An attempt is made to correlate the journal's productivity according to Population Index with the citation impact according to Social Sciences Citation Index.     

Educating the teacher educator—A Ugandan case study

Who educates teacher educators? How are teacher educators educated and prepared for their roles and tasks? This article uses a review of a two-year full-time Diploma in Teacher Education (DTE) for teacher educators in Uganda to engage with these questions. The article begins with a presentation of the Ugandan teacher education context and a literature review, focusing mainly on teacher educator knowledge, preparation, roles and tasks. It then presents the review process and discusses the main findings that emerged, exploring their implications for the education of teacher educators in Uganda and internationally. The main implications concern the critical role of teacher education pedagogy, context, teacher educator knowledge, tasks and roles, reflective practice, practitioner research, and the background, capacities and education of the educator of teacher educators.     

Masculinity, moral atmosphere, and moral functioning of high school football players

In order to identify factors associated with on-field moral functioning among student athletes within the unique context of football, we examined masculine gender role conflict, moral atmosphere, and athletic identity. Using structural equation modeling to assess survey data from 204 high school football players, results demonstrated that moral atmosphere (i.e., the influence of coaches and teammates) was significantly associated with participants' process of on-field moral functioning across the levels of judgment, intention, and behavior. Neither masculine gender role conflict nor athletic identity significantly predicted moral functioning, but the results indicated that participants' identification with the athlete role significantly predicted conflict with socialized gender roles. Results suggest that in the aggressive and violent sport of football, coaches can have a direct influence on players' moral functioning process. Coaches can also have an indirect effect by influencing all the players so that a culture of ethical play can be cultivated among teammates and spread from the top down.     

Urinary excretion of 3-Methoxy-4-Hydroxy-Phenylglycol (MHPG) and 3-Methoxy-4-Hydroxy Mandelic acid (VMA) in depression

Urinary excretion of 3 methoxy-4-hydroxy phenyl glycol (MHPG) and 3-methoxy-4-hydroxy mandelic acid (VMA) were estimated in 18 Post-Japanese Encephalitis depressive patients and 20 unipolar depressive patients to determine their biochemical differences. Both the metabolites were low in the former group in comparison to the later group, indicating that the metabolic events in respect to catecholamine turn over are different in two disorders.     

Applying reciprocity and accommodation theories to supervisor/subordinate communication

Reciprocity and accommodation theories were applied to communication between supervisors and subordinates. It was reasoned that supervisors and subordinates informally (and not necessarily consciously) negotiate communication styles with each other which become significantly correlated over time. It was hypothesized that the supervisors’ Socio‐Communicative Style and the subordinates’ Socio‐Communicative Orientation would be positively correlated with each other and both would predict the subordinates’ perceptions of the supervisors’ credibility, attractiveness, and the subordinates’ general attitude toward the supervisor and communicating with that supervisor. The results were consistent with the hypotheses.
