This paper calculates the public savings (financial benefits) from greater public investments in the education of African-American males. Over one-fifth of each age cohort of black males in US is not a high school graduate. We identify five interventions that would—based on credible research—increase the graduation rate; we also report the public cost of each intervention. We then calculate the lifetime public benefits in terms of increased tax revenues and lower spending on health and crime. In present values, for a black male aged 20, these public benefits amount to $256,700 per new graduate and the median intervention would cost only $90,700. The benefit/cost ratio is 2.83. Simply equating the high school graduation rate of black males with that of white males would yield public savings of $3.98 billion for each age cohort. These results suggest that increased investments in education for black males at risk of dropping out of high school should be an economic priority. 相似文献

This article presents the findings of an empirical study that aimed to gain an in-depth understanding of how inclusive support systems are configured. A qualitative case study approach was used to explore the trajectories, shared beliefs and daily practices that shape the dynamics of three educational centres recognized by external assessors for their inclusive policies and attention to diversity. The analysis carried out enabled the identification of patterns of worldviews and practices that underpin the development of sustainable inclusive school proposals, as well as an understanding of the complex interrelationship between context, resources, opportunities, threats and teaching approaches that define particular dynamics. The findings obtained help to illustrate and provide inspiration for other schools committed to defending the basic rights of all children and young people, as well as designers of educational policies and programmes. 相似文献

In this paper, we intend to illustrate some of the possible uses of the CCD camera in science teaching. We start with an introduction of the Flexcam which is one form of the CCD camera used primarily by biology teachers. We then explain the structure, working principles, and applications of the CCD camera at large. Examples of demonstrations, observations, and scientific skill using the CCD camera in connection with the TV monitor for topics under each of the main science subjects, biology, chemistry, physics and general science, in high school will be presented. Modifications needed in order to adopt the camera are elaborated in each case. Finally, a brief history of our adventure and some remarks are given to encourage readers to explore further uses of the CCD camera in one's own teaching. 相似文献

In this study, we aim to investigate how students on a cross-disciplinary postgraduate course in research communication describe the formative peer feedback they have received on their oral presentations and what impact they report it has had on their performance. The study is based on a qualitative analysis of 36 transcribed video recordings from the course. Our findings show that the students, through their reflections and revisions, clearly demonstrate to have appropriated and, in some cases, also transformed the course content: they were able to select parts of the feedback relevant to their development and redefine some of the concepts to suit rhetorical situations. Surprisingly, feedback on deficits in student presentations resulted both in reflection and revision, while affirmatory feedback resulted, if at all, in reflection only. These results may help develop effective educational tools for assessment of oral performances in higher education. 相似文献

mathematics achievement of 123 seventh-grade Hispanic boys and girls. Personalization was accomplished by using personal information
provided by students on a biographical inventory. Subjects were randomly assigned within sex to one of three versions of a
two-day instructional program on one-step and two-step mathematics word problems. Subjects in both the individual and group
personalization treatments scored significantly higher on the posttest than those in the nonpersonalized treatment on two-step
word problems, but not on one-step problems. Subjects in the individualized treatment had significantly more positive attitudes

ABSTRACTThe objective of this study is to analyse different models of educational support that are used in schools with public funding from the perspective of support teachers, counsellors and members of management teams. Participants were 79 professionals from the three areas mentioned above. The methodological approach was a phenomenological qualitative one using focus groups and subsequent qualitative analysis of the data. The systems of categories and subcategories underwent a progressive process of triangulation. The results show that professionals identify support practices that can be divided into two differentiated models: a traditional model linked to a medical perspective of providing personal support to the most vulnerable students and a support model consistent with inclusive education. There are also discrepancies among professionals, especially about the need for support to be provided within the reference classroom. The discussion focuses on identifying essential aspects, to more effectively support students and teachers in an ordinary school context. In addition, professionals question the regulations for their disconnection from the reality they experience in schools. All this requires a rethinking of the functions of support teachers supported by careful initial and ongoing training. 相似文献

In today's information-rich environment, business faculty are challenged to teach students how to conduct effective business research and evaluate information critically. We describe collaboration between business professors and reference librarians in an introductory business course. Students were surveyed before and after completion of a Business Discovery Project requiring use of print and electronic sources in writing a research paper on a publicly traded company. Student perceptions indicated increased abilities in communication skills, research skills, use of business information sources, and composition skills; paired t tests showed these increases to be significant. 相似文献
