A system for rapid production of photographic records

In the land-based radar direction of aircraft it was found necessary to transfer to a large plotting screen a 10X magnification of the PPI cathode-ray tube face. An instrument was developed to do this photographically, with the projected image lagging only 15 seconds behind the latest information. A single 360-degree sweep on the PPI tube is reduced to a $\text{1}\text{2}$-inch diameter image on Eastman Type 5302 Fine Grain Release Positive Film. The resultant image is rapid-processed by the application of hot solutions in a special processing cup which restricts the liquids to a small circular area on the film.The spent solutions are quickly removed by a vacuum line and the near dry image is indexed into the projection system where an air pressure gate completes the drying, cools the film, and holds it flat during projection.The projected image, at a magnification of over 300X, has sufficient quality to resolve all the pertinent detail of the tube face.The method is felt to have some general application.     

Federal information policy: Protecting the free flow of information

Federal information policy is a tangled web, woven over many decades and one which tends to trap information, rather than making it easily available. Although some of the difficulty has been caused by a lack of coherence and by some confusion among members of the Congress, the principal difficulty recently has been the lack of trust exhibited by the Reagan administration. If the United States is to regain its economic and technological health, a well-thought-out and administered Federal information policy will be the cornerstone to those ends. An informed electorate can help by assisting Congress with ideas regarding needs, both present and future. Together with an informed administration, we can, and must, create the Federal information policy that meets all our needs without jeopardizing our national security.

National identity,social legacy and Qatar 2022: the cultural ramifications of FIFA’s first Arab World Cup

ABSTRACT

This article argues that the decision to award Qatar the World Cup in 2022 will have a lasting impact on the Gulf state. I suggest that hosting the 2022 World Cup is a central part of Qatar’s strategy to announce itself as a legitimate actor on the world stage, one unique amongst other Muslim and Arab nations. I contend that the World Cup is a vital part of this process because it allows Qatar a space that permits the emirate to address specific issues within its society in a manner which coexists with, rather than surrendering to, external values and norms. The article concludes by arguing that if Qatar 2022 is to justify FIFA’s decision to cross one of the last civilizational bridges left in global sport, it will have to demonstrate that the image and reform it presents to the rest of the world are genuine and lasting.
