Assessing the Support Needs of Children with a Disability in Regular Classes

This paper reports the development of an instrument to assess the support needs of students with a disability in regular classes. The instrument was developed by a University-based research team on behalf of the New South Wales Department of Education and Training, and was used as the basis for providing funding support for over 12,000 students in the year 2000. The developmental process was robust in that it was based on three types of information: assessment approaches being used in other locations; expert judgement by Departmental officers; and statistical analyses of data obtained using an initial form of the instrument. Statistical analysis was based on a final form of the instrument consisting of 11 focus areas structured into three domains - physical needs, learning needs, and social needs of students. These domains had good construct and face validities and high score reliabilities.     

Predictive value of serum thyroglobulin in treated patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma

An in-house radioimmuno assay for serum thyroglobulin was developed in our laboratory and compared its relative sensitivity with that of whole body scan in the detection of residual tumour or metastases and evaluated the predictive value of serum thyroglobulin in the clinical course of the disease. Ninety six patients after thyroidectomy were followed up for a maximum period of five years in this study. The sensitivity and specificity of serum thyroglobulin were found to be close to that of whole body scan (85% and 94% respectively). According to this study, a serum thyroglobulin >40 ng/ml can differentiate between patients with metastases and those in remission. Serum thyroglobulin can replace whole body scan during the subsequent follow-up if the patient had concordant whole body scan and serum thyroglobulin during initial assessment.

Assessing problem solving in mathematics: Some variables related to student performance

A mathematical problem is defined here as a question not dependent on specific syllabus content, and one sufficiently new to the student such that it cannot be solved by a previously known method. With increased attention being paid to this type of mathematical problem solving at the primary school level, the need for reliable and valid methods of assessment has become more apparent. This paper reports the results of using a new problem solving test, developed for use in the upper primary school, with 371 students in Years 4,5 and 6 at government schools in Melbourne. Particular attention is given to the effects of year level, sex and the method of test administration on student performance for different types of items and different problem solving processes. The performance of Year 4 students was generally lower than that of other students, but differences were small for most items and processes between Years 5 and 6. Although most of the differences in performance between the sexes were not significant, the girls had higher scores than the boys for the total score, for all processes and for all items except the spatial item. The method of administration was important for performance, especially for the girls. The marking schedule developed enabled high intra- and inter-marker reliabilities to be obtained.     

Application of the LaGrange polynomial in skeletal muscle fatigue analysis

The percentage of decrement in torque and the number of serial contractions are mutually exclusive methodological controls in the study of muscular fatigue. This paper examines the feasibility of using the LaGrange polynomial in the analysis of voluntary muscular fatigue patterns. Twenty-one men (ages 20-60 years) reported to the orthopedic biomechanics laboratory on 2 days separated by 4 months. During both sessions, participants completed three maximal isokinetic (180 deg x s(-1)) contractions of the knee extensors to serve as baseline, before starting the fatigue protocol. The fatigue protocol consisted of serial contractions until a 50% strength decrement was reached. The LaGrange polynomial was first used to interpolate the individual fatigue pattern for each participant into 15 data points (trials). Data analysis was then conducted on these 15 data points. Intraclass correlation analysis of variance showed that the reliability of baseline torque was very good (.93). Baseline torque, the average of three trials, exhibited a 5.4 Nm (6%) increase from the first to second test session (p < .05). The mean level of torque, average of the 15-point fatigue pattern, also increased 7.5 Nm (15%) on the second test session (p < .05). The classic torque deficit for the first trial of a fatigue series was preserved by the interpolation method. Serial contractions resulted in an average decrease in torque of 29.5 Nm (50%) from the first to last trial (p <.05). The interpolation method also retained the linear and quadratic trend components commonly observed for isometric and isokinetic fatigue patterns. The two trend components accounted for 94.7% of the total trial variance. It was concluded that the LaGrange polynomial used to interpolate fatigue patterns to fewer data points was successful.     

Molecule matters

Ever since its isolation in 1820, Quinine has played a crucial role in the development of organic chemistry, chemical industry and modern medicine. The total synthesis of quinine, widely regarded as an event of epochal importance was claimed by Woodward and Doering in 1945. This work, however, heavily relied on unsubstantiated literature reports and it appears that Woodward’s work fell short of a total synthesis of quinine. The first stereoselective total synthesis of quinine was accomplished only in 2001, by Stork, who incidentally is the originator of the concept of stereoselectivity in total synthesis. Naturally, this work has been attested as a landmark in organic synthesis by leaders in the field.
