ABSTRACTThis article illustrates the historic relationship between the Brown v. Board of Education decision and the school choice movement. It will discuss the immediate push back to Brown particularly from Southern states that were resistant to desegregating public schools; a move that would provide African-American parents with educational choice for their children. Within the United States Congress 101 members, most from formerly Confederate states, drafted what is commonly known as the Southern Manifesto intent on reversing the Court’s decision and urging states to defy the law. Sixty years after the signing of the Southern Manifesto, there is still a coalition pushing for “freedom of choice,” this time with a sincere interest in the well-being of students trapped in the nation's lowest-performing schools and a mandate for equal opportunity, racial, ethnic, and gender equality. 相似文献

Preparing youngsters for an aging society requires teachers who keep pace with health science research. The Stealth GerontologyTM program educates teachers regarding aging-related issues. The design and assessment of the program are reported in this paper. Teachers attended sessions including direct instruction and hands-on participation (e.g., laboratories). Sound educational methods were modeled through interactions with university researchers and lessons from the Positively Aging® curriculum, while highlighting aging topics matched to educational standards. Participants showed significant improvement (p ≤ 0.05) in eight of nine topics in multiple-choice pre- and posttests. Evaluations indicate a high degree of success. 相似文献

The shifting emphasis from institutionalto community‐based care for the elderly in Canada necessitates a new approach to geriatric assessment and education. Geriatric assessment outreach teams using a multidimensional clinical and educational model are described in the context of a regionally based geriatric program in Ottawa. This community‐based multidimensional model is compared to the traditional institutional‐based multidisciplinary team model, particularly in terms of its advantages and relevance for the approximately 33% of Canada's elderly living in small towns and rural areas. The educational model and training program for multidimensional geriatric outreach assessors are described. The clinical operations and advantages of the multidimensional model are fully described, particularly their critical role in community‐based assessment and triage to further specialized geriatric services. 相似文献

There are few resources available for business ethics education from a religious perspective. This is due to the specialization of careers, the mobility of workers, and clergy discomfort with the topic—all of which have led to a decline of ecclesiastical influence in this area. The author discusses why business ethics education is important in the local congregation and outlines one model for both teaching theological/philosophical bases for moral action and providing support groups for businesspeople struggling with moral dilemmas.
