Understanding the experiences of bilingual,Latino/a adolescents: Voices from gifted and general education

Eight gifted and eight general‐education students engaged in discussions regarding their observations of, experiences in, and recommendations for education. Six categories emerged through qualitative analysis of their conversations. These categories include: problem solving, task commitment, self‐perceptions, education, communication, and discrimination. Content within each category provides a glimpse into the students’ perceptions of their schooling experiences. The roles of ethnic identity development, identification with majority culture, adolescence, and gifted‐ness are examined and recommendations for future research are provided.     

Teaching Philosophy and Methods of Restorative Care to Assisted Living Owners and Staff

To implement restorative care in assisted living facilities, staff need to understand the philosophy and learn methods to help residents maintain optimal function. In this study, the researchers developed a multimedia training program designed to teach staff how to encourage residents to increase their participation in dressing themselves. Researchers conducted a pilot test to measure the short-term effects of the training on 40 staff from two states. Program effects were measured by completing a survey developed by the researchers. Pretest scores were significantly related to gender (women as a group had higher scores than men). Results indicated significant gains in knowledge at posttest. In addition, 93% of participants described positive changes related to restorative care that they planned to make at their facility as a result of the training.     

The effect of life-experience credits on admissions to graduate school

The results of a 13-item questionnaire mailed to all graduates of the Division of General Studies of Iona College, New Rochelle, N.Y., who had received life-experience credits as part of their undergraduate degree are presented. The purpose of the study was to determine the acceptability of life-experience credits by graduate schools in order to provide students with accurate information in advising them about postgraduate plans, to determine if there were a trend toward or away from acceptability of nontraditional credentialing and, if necessary, to be an advocate for our students and the concept of life-experience credentialing.     

Interaction between Reading Test Results and Elementary Reading Programs 1

All Pupils in grades 2‐4 in suburban Lyngby‐Taarbæk north of Copenhagen are tested each year with silent reading tests. In the school years 1975‐77 the results have been analyzed in a systematic dialogue between teachers of the mother tongue and reading specialists. This interaction seems to be a potent mechanism for change in educational planning. The individual class ‐ as the educational unit with common developmental conditions ‐ is given most weight in the analysis. The teacher's awareness of the reading development in the class is raised,’and the focus on individual children is related to the specific class. The general reading progress in Lyngby‐Taarbæk has been raised, and the number of pupils with severe reading problems has been reduced after some years of an unsatisfactory gradual lowering of general reading proficiency in the first school years. Results are used exclusively for internal evaluation.

     

Building Your Licensing and Negotiation Skills Toolkit

Licensing and the negotiating of electronic resources can be a daunting task for librarians who lack the proper skill sets and are unfamiliar with the intricacies of publisher agreements. Claire Dygert broke down the individual elements of a standard licensing agreement and explained the importance of protecting the rights of libraries. By providing insight from her years of experience, librarians learned how to develop a support network, build confidence, and be more effective negotiators.     

Researching elite education: affectively inferred belongings,desires and exclusions

This paper reflects on key moments occurring during the course of a three-year study of elite girls’ education, with a focus on the power relations that emerged between researchers and elites within the context in which the study was conducted. Central to our analysis is a focus on the affective dimensions of interaction between the researcher and study participants. Our experience gaining access to elite schools in the study illustrates how productive relationships may be fostered by a demonstrated alignment of interests; the desire for intellectual dialogue; and factors linked to the dynamics of the local education market. In our interviews with elite young women, we found that experiences of affinity, foreignness or awe within the interview process triggered different systems of affect. These moments are significant in shaping understandings of the social projects pursued by elite subjects.
