The whens and hows of learning to rank for web search

Web search engines are increasingly deploying many features, combined using learning to rank techniques. However, various practical questions remain concerning the manner in which learning to rank should be deployed. For instance, a sample of documents with sufficient recall is used, such that re-ranking of the sample by the learned model brings the relevant documents to the top. However, the properties of the document sample such as when to stop ranking—i.e. its minimum effective size—remain unstudied. Similarly, effective listwise learning to rank techniques minimise a loss function corresponding to a standard information retrieval evaluation measure. However, the appropriate choice of how to calculate the loss function—i.e. the choice of the learning evaluation measure and the rank depth at which this measure should be calculated—are as yet unclear. In this paper, we address all of these issues by formulating various hypotheses and research questions, before performing exhaustive experiments using multiple learning to rank techniques and different types of information needs on the ClueWeb09 and LETOR corpora. Among many conclusions, we find, for instance, that the smallest effective sample for a given query set is dependent on the type of information need of the queries, the document representation used during sampling and the test evaluation measure. As the sample size is varied, the selected features markedly change—for instance, we find that the link analysis features are favoured for smaller document samples. Moreover, despite reflecting a more realistic user model, the recently proposed ERR measure is not as effective as the traditional NDCG as a learning loss function. Overall, our comprehensive experiments provide the first empirical derivation of best practices for learning to rank deployments.     

Attachment Dimensions and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse

Gottman (1993 Gottman , J. M. ( 1993 ). A theory of marital dissolution and stability . Journal of Family Psychology , 7 , 57 – 75 .[Crossref] , [Google Scholar], 1994a, 1994b) identified 4 types of conflict behaviors (criticism, defensiveness, contempt, and stonewalling) that are so relationally destructive that he labeled them “the four horsemen of the apocalypse.” This study argues that it is important to identify antecedents of these kinds of communication behaviors, and assesses the degree to which attachment orientations are useful predictors of them.

Data from 170 individuals in established romantic relationships were used to test proposed associations between attachment orientations (anxiety and avoidance) and questionnaire measures of criticalness, defensiveness, contemptuousness, and stonewalling. Attachment orientations predicted an average of 22% of the variance in the criterion variables above and beyond the variance explained by relational satisfaction, with attachment anxiety being an especially potent predictor. The findings suggest that individuals whose attachment orientations reflect fears of abandonment and rejection may tend to enact conflict behaviors that increase the chances of their concerns becoming reality.     

Anonymity in Applied Communication Research: Tensions Between IRBs,Researchers, and Human Subjects

This essay examines the rather complex role of anonymity in communication research as revealed in the narratives submitted to this special issue. First, narratives were examined quantitatively to assess the prevalence of issues related to anonymity, with terms such as “anonymous” and “confidential” emerging most often. Next, a thematic analysis of the narratives suggests five tensions discussed in some detail: anonymity or (not and) confidentiality, over-promising and under-delivering anonymity, to sign and record … or not, named vs. anonymous vs. pseudonymous, and whether institutional review boards (IRBs) should be anonymous. The essay concludes with several applied recommendations for IRBs, researchers, and participants as they confront these tensions linked to the role of anonymity in human subjects research.

Season-long increases in perceived muscle soreness in professional rugby league players: role of player position,match characteristics and playing surface

Rugby League (RL) is a high-impact collision sport characterised by repeated sprints and numerous high-speed impacts and consequently players often report immediate and prolonged muscle soreness in the days after a match. We examined muscle soreness after matches during a full season to understand the extent to which match characteristics influence soreness. Thirty-one elite Super League players provided daily measures of muscle soreness after each of the 26 competitive fixtures of the 2012 season. Playing position, phase of the season, playing surface and match characteristics were recorded from each match. Muscle soreness peaked at day 1 and was still apparent at day 4 post-game with no attenuation in the magnitude of muscle soreness over the course of the season. Neither playing position, phase of season or playing surface had any effects on the extent of muscle soreness. Playing time and total number of collisions were significantly correlated with higher ratings of muscle soreness, especially in the forwards. These data indicate the absence “contact adaptations” in elite rugby players with soreness present throughout the entire season. Strategies must now be implemented to deal with the physical and psychological consequences of prolonged feeling of pain.
