Differences among Male A,B, and C Master's Degree Candidates in a Counseling Practicum

Little or no research has been done on the counseling practicum grade as a measure of counseling effectiveness. This study explored the intellective and nonintellective differences among males with A, B, and C grades in the counseling practicum. Significant differences among grade categories were observed on 7 of 17 variables. The nature and direction of the differences among males with grades of A, B, or C suggested that practicum grades tend to make valid discriminations between candidates with high and low potential as counselors.

The framework is in need of a fifth, why dimension. The why dimension helps to place learning within an evolutionary and cultural perspective and to better understand students' motivation to learn and their preferences for what, where, and how to learn.     

Achieving Quality in the Short Cycle Sector of Higher Engineering Education in Europe: The UK Scenario

The formation process in the UK for a professional engineer is a combination of academic learning, a period of training and experience, and a peer review. This paper sets out the minimum standards required by the Engineering Council and describes in detail the Routes to Membership of the Institution of Civil Engineers. In particular it concentrates on how the educational base is satisfied by the accreditation of individual degree courses that meet the academic requirements, and the procedures adopted. It reviews the current thinking and possible changes to ensure the maintenance of standards.     

Profanity as a Critical Variable in Counseling

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of the use of profanity in counseling. Participants were randomly assigned to view one of three videotapes, two of which included profanity. The participants tended to give higher therapeutic ratings to sessions including both client-initiated and counselor-initiated profanity than to the session free of profanity. Results are presented in tabular form.

The author describes how student-conducted and videotaped initial family interviews can provide a common frame of reference for learning family systems theories.
