How will the Second Level Support Service (SLSS), established to support curriculum reform and the professional development of teachers, sustain its own professional development and identity in a climate of change and uncertainty? How will the SLSS maintain its vision of continuous professional development in the midst of educational reform? This article reports on a research project undertaken jointly by the SLSS and the Department of Education and Professional Studies, University of Limerick, designed to support the professional development of the SLSS, as it addressed, in a reflexive way, the questions posed above. The article outlines: the context, including the public policy context, in which the research was undertaken; the research design which incorporates narrative enquiry and collegial conversation; and some of the main themes which emerge from the three focus groups, whose conversations provided the research data. Chief among these themes is the degree to which the vision and practice of the SLSS supports or challenges the view of teachers and teaching which underlies the reform of education. The article offers some concluding remarks which relate the project to critical theory and organisational development. 相似文献
The paper charts the progress of the ‘Window Sills’ project in Exeter, UK which brings together artists, art students, cultural organisations, and the community in a plan for urban renewal. Seeking to loosen boundaries, it uses the idea of ‘thirdspace’ to question the notion of public and private space, using the city's and its river's constant changes as an analogy. The window and the window sill become the interface where the project seeks a transformational act in the lives of those involved by locating the experience in the local and the personal, although the implications cross much wider boundaries. 相似文献
Courses: Undergraduate or graduate organizational/crisis communication or public relations courses
Objective: The goal for this single class activity is for students to apply discourse of renewal to an organizational crisis fueled through social media. 相似文献
Purpose: The aim of this study was to review the effect of school-based physical activity interventions on children’s wellbeing.
Method: A systematic search of school-based physical activity studies was conducted using EBSCOhost PsycInfo, EBSCOhost Medline and Web of Science. Initially 995 studies were retrieved and, following the removal of duplicates, the titles and abstracts of 984 studies were screened. This screening identified 53 relevant studies from which 42 were excluded, resulting in 11 articles being reviewed.
Results: Three studies reported a positive increase in wellbeing; however, only one of those studies also significantly increased physical activity. It was apparent that the measurement of wellbeing and physical activity was inconsistent across studies, making conclusions difficult to draw. The wellbeing measures used neglected to account for the children’s perspectives of wellbeing.
Conclusions: The effect of a physical activity intervention on increasing wellbeing appears to be more complex than originally believed. The complexity may in part be due to methodological issues and the choice of wellbeing and physical activity measurement. We recommend that future physical activity interventions include a measure of wellbeing developed from the child’s perspective, and that future reviews narrow the search to only interventions that have had success at increasing physical activity before exploring effects on wellbeing. 相似文献
The claim that large doses of vitamin-mineral supplements benefit mentally retarded children has captured the attention of the general public and the medical profession. A study by Harrell, Capp, Davis, Pearless, and Ravitz (1981) reported increases in IQ and improvements in behavior among mentally retarded subjects (one third of whom were children with Down syndrome) receiving nutritional supplementation. However, subsequent studies, focusing exclusively on children with Down syndrome and using less flawed research designs, have demonstrated that vitamin therapy is not useful for members of this population. 相似文献
There are many educational interventions being implemented to address workforce issues in the field of nanotechnology. However,
there is no instrument to assess the impact of these interventions on student awareness of, exposure to, and motivation for
nanotechnology. To address this need, the Nanotechnology Awareness Instrument was conceptualized. This paper is a progress report of the instrument development process. Version 1 of the instrument was
administered to 335 first-year students majoring in food and agriculture fields in a pre–post fashion relative to a brief
exposure to nanotechnology in the classroom. Following item analysis of Version 1 responses, a revision of the instrument
was completed. Version 2 was administered to 1,426 first-year engineering students for the purpose of conducting item and
factor analyses. Results indicate that the Nanotechnology Awareness Instrument shows potential to provide valid information about student awareness of, exposure to, and motivation for nanotechnology.
The instrument is not a valid measure of nano-knowledge and this subscale was dropped from the final version of the instrument.
Implications include the use of the instrument to evaluate programs, interventions, or courses that attempt to increase student
awareness of nanotechnology. Further study is necessary to determine how the Nanotechnology Awareness Instrument functions as a pre–post measure. 相似文献
