The importance of research on misconceptions about chemical equilibrium is well recognized by educators, but in the past,
researchers’ interest has centered on student misconceptions and has neglected teacher misconceptions. Focusing on the effects
of adding more reactants or products on chemical equilibrium, this article discusses the various misconceptions held by high
school teachers. A misconception test was administered to two samples of chemistry teachers in Nanjing, China. Of the 109
teachers who participated in the test, only one understood that adding more CS2 gas to the equilibrium system CS2(g) + 4H2(g) ⇌ CH4(g) + 2H2S(g) at constant pressure and temperature can shift the equilibrium to the reactant or product side, depending upon the amount
of CS2 in the initial equilibrium system. Most of the teachers relied on Le Chatelier’s principle and thus made erroneous predictions.
The misconception test also revealed that those teachers who managed to compute equilibrium constants had a limited conceptual
understanding of chemical equilibrium. Implications of these findings for teacher education and chemistry curriculum development

This study, by questionnaire, of a cohort of university bioscience students, has clarified factors influencing course choice, particularly those relating to the role of schools. In-school experiences provided the earliest source of interest in science for the majority, with males developing interests earlier and ages 10-14 important for both genders. Interest and success in previous studies were the most popular reasons given as the main influence on course choice. Work experience was very influential for some. The practical nature of school science, intellectual satisfaction of studying science and quality of senior school teaching and examination results in biology and chemistry, were identified by almost all as encouraging influences. Significant gender differences were found for influences of early perception of science as difficult, study of physics at 14-16 and quality of physics teaching in the senior school. Advice from the university and attendance at an open day were influential, particularly for female students. 相似文献

Interactivity, group learning and student engagement are accepted as key features of social constructivist learning theories.
The challenge is to understand the interplay between such features in different learning environments. This study focused
on the qualitative differences between two interventions—small-groups and whole-class discussions. In both interventions,
three short video slices on the abstract topic ‘the physics of superconductivity’ were interspersed with the different discussion
styles. The video slices are based on the Bruner stages. Twenty-nine first year university physics students completed a pre-test,
underwent the intervention and completed a post-test. The remainder of the data were collected from student drawings, video
recordings, observer notes and facilitator feedback. Results indicate that the use of the video slices in both interventions
were successful in changing students’ understandings of superconductivity. However, the small groups treatment tended to facilitate
questioning, meaning-making and subsequent changes of ideas more so than the whole class discussions. Implications for research

Constructivism claims to be a postepistemology that replaces 'traditional' concepts of knowledge. Supporters of constructivism have argued that progress requires that pre-service teachers be weaned off traditional approaches and that they should adopt constructivist views of knowledge. Constructivism appears to be gaining ground rapidly and should no longer be viewed as an exercise in radical thinking primarily aimed at generating innovative teaching. It has become an integral part of the pedagogic mainstream. Close examination of the theoretical foundations of constructivism, however, reveals that the basic assumptions of constructivism are flawed. Far from being a postepistemology, constructivism simply regresses to a pre-Renaissance mindset with theology replaced with a psychologism. OBJECTIVE: This study compares homeless women who had childhood histories of foster care or other out-of-home placement to those who have not. METHOD: A countywide probability sample of homeless women (n = 179) received structured interviews. RESULTS: One-third of homeless women reported being raised apart from their parents. Among women with children under age 18, most (61.5%) had children who had lived in foster care or other out-of-home placements. Variables associated with homeless mothers' children living in foster care or other out-of-home placements were: Child was school-age, mother was age 35 or older, mother had a current alcohol or drug use disorder, mother experienced childhood sexual abuse, and mother ran away from home (when under age 18). CONCLUSIONS: Parenting is difficult for homeless mothers who may need to place their children with others to facilitate school attendance. Parent-child interaction may be problematic in family shelters where privacy is rare. Thus, programs promoting family preservation for homeless mothers should provide parenting support as well as permanent housing. 相似文献

Inconsistent response patterns have been used with other measures to screen for child maltreatment. To date the inconsistency (IC) scale, a validity scale on the Child Abuse Potential (CAP) Inventory, has not been used as a screening criterion for physical child abuse. The present study examined the responses of 89 physical child abusers and 108 comparison subjects to determine if the CAP Inventory IC scale has any utility in the screening for physical child abuse. While results indicated the CAP Inventory IC scale scores were significantly higher for the physical child abuse group, a series of discriminant analyses indicated that the IC scale did not account for any meaningful variance after variance related to child abuse factors was removed. Further, the results indicated that dependence on the IC scale alone for physical child abuse screening purposes could be expected to produce excessive false positive and false negative classifications. 相似文献

This study investigated the extent to which position in the Australian Football League (AFL) national draft is associated with individual game performance metrics. Physical/technical skill performance metrics were collated from all participants in the 2014 national under 18 (U18) championships (18 games) drafted into the AFL (n = 65; 17.8 ± 0.5 y); 232 observations. Players were subdivided into draft position (ranked 1–65) and then draft round (1–4). Here, earlier draft selection (i.e., closer to 1) reflects a more desirable player. Microtechnology and a commercial provider facilitated the quantification of individual game performance metrics (n = 16). Linear mixed models were fitted to data, modelling the extent to which draft position was associated with these metrics. Draft position in the first/second round was negatively associated with “contested possessions” and “contested marks”, respectively. Physical performance metrics were positively associated with draft position in these rounds. Correlations weakened for the third/fourth rounds. Contested possessions/marks were associated with an earlier draft selection. Physical performance metrics were associated with a later draft selection. Recruiters change the type of U18 player they draft as the selection pool reduces. juniors with contested skill appear prioritised. 相似文献
