The Interfacing of Preservice and Inservice Experiences of Reform-Based Teaching: A Longitudinal Study 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1

This article contrasts four elementary teachers who were graduates of a teacher education program that incorporated a reform-based
mathematics methods course. The report provides results from a four-year longitudinal study that extended from the time that
the participants were preservice teachers until the end of their second year of teaching. The article provides background
information of each teacher, vignettes from her teaching, excerpts from interviews, and an analysis of each teacher's case.
Results from the case studies indicate that two of the four teachers sustained their cognitively-based conceptions about mathematics
teaching and learning, and implemented these conceptions into practice. The analysis suggests that there were several factors
that influenced the teachers' conceptions and the choices they made in their teaching: personal commitment, professional strength,
curriculum, planning, assessment, beliefs, knowledge, and support from school administration. The article concludes with implications
for teaching and questions about the nature of what might be required in the beginning years of teaching if new teachers are
expected to implement reform-based mathematics teaching practices.

Since 1980, national university departmental ranking exercises have developed in several countries. This paper reviews exercises
in the U.S., U.K. and Australia to assess the state-of-the-art and to identify common themes and trends. The findings are
that the exercises are becoming more elaborate, even unwieldy, and that there is some retreat from complexity. There seems
to be a movement towards bibliometric measures. The exercises also seem to be effective in enhancing university focus on research
strategy.

Students face significant pressures in their decision about their career plan. These pressures are simultaneously internal and external, personal and social, individual and from the reference group. The present paper aims at understanding the reasons driving students' choices, perceived needs, and aspirations. Moreover, it discusses the major influences/pressures of the student's choice and tries to understand how choice is affected by the students' socioeconomic and cultural background and other factors such as institutional reputation or “professional heritage.” The construction of the career plan is analyzed by applying a qualitative analysis methodology through content analysis of the freshmen discourses. The results point out the relevance of social status, intelligence, gender, competences, values, and interests of each person for the construction of his/her career plan. All these levels are highly influenced by self-esteem, which is closely related to the social value of career options and paths. The more central the variable self-esteem is, the less susceptible it will become to change other variables such as educational level, profession accessibility, or gender adequacy. 相似文献

This paper explores the role of perceptions of the opinionsof others as they relate to the formation of public opinion.Two interrelated theories involving such perceptions, the thirdperson effect and the spiral of silence, are tested in the contextof public opinion regarding divestment of financial interestsin South Africa. As hypothesized by the third person effect, perceptions of theinfluence of media reports on others were found to be consistentlygreater than perceptions of influence on self. Findings werestrongly supportive of this component of the third personeffect hypothesis. Perceptions of the opinions of otherswere also explored in relation to respondents' willingness toexpress their opinions publicly. As suggested by the spiralof silence theory, respondents were found to be more willingto express their opinions publicly when they perceived a trendin support of their viewpoint, or when there was a greater perceivedlikelihood of achieving success for their issue position. The size of the effect produced from joining these two processesis moderated by the role of issue salience. People perceivingdivestment as a highly important issue are more likely to ascribegreater media influence to others than to themselves, but theirwillingness to express their opinions publicly is least likelyto be influenced by perceptions of the climate of opinion. 相似文献
