The use of student learning styles in teaching world politics

This article describes how experiential learning theory can be utilized to teach introductory world politics. Student learning styles and their modes of learning are considered in course design. The objective is to create a learning environment that facilitates active participation and reflection.He is coeditor ofConflict in American Foreign Policy: The Issues Debated (1985) and teaches primarily in the fields of American Foreign Policy and Soviet Politics. Patricia H. Murrell is Director of the Center for Study of Higher Education and a Professor in the Department of Counseling and Personnel Services at Memphis State University. She is co-author ofLearning Styles: Implications for Improving Educational Practices (1987) and has studied the learning preferences of graduate and undergraduate students, including law students.

Intellectual Humility and Morality as Consultee-Centered Consultation Epistemologies

ABSTRACT

Little research examines how epistemological constructs affect the consultation process in schools. We consider how the epistemological constructs of (a) intellectual humility and (b) moral foundations may moderate the effectiveness of consultee-centered consultation. We define the constructs and provide examples of their potential influences on consultee-centered consultation. Then we provide four areas of investigation for future research on the epistemologies of school-based consultation.     

When Basic Mathematics Skills Predict Nothing: implications for education and training

A study was conducted into the mathematical needs of engineering apprentices, triggered by a decline in the basic number skills of applicants. The mathematical challenges of engineering differ from the mathematics taught in school. In particular, great precision is required and different techniques; a good deal of practical problem solving is necessary, too. Conventional measures of educational attainment had high predictive validity; a test created to sample the mathematical skills directly involved in engineering had low predictive validity. We conclude that perfect mathematical technique is essential in engineering; the competencies learned from a broad‐based education generalise to practical work; acquisition of mathematical technique does not; technical perfection is not a ‘foundation’, but rather is a component of mathematical education; mathematics education should encourage the development of a broad range of skills and some successful application of technique; and the deployment of skills in a range of contexts should be encouraged.     

Educational technology professionals worldwide: A compass to international understanding

An International Review section within this special international issue may seem redundant. This regular department usually features articles on research and/or development in countries outside of North America. This “review”, however, does not highlight any one country or program but views the entire world as an appropriate domain for educational technology practitioners. The purpose of this paper is to outline some of the many opportunities available for competent educational technology professionals to contribute their knowledge and skills in international settings beyond the North American borders. He was Founding Director, ERIC Clearinghouse on Information and Technology; Fulbright Professor in Chile, Peru and in the American Republics; has taught and consulted in Indonesia, iran, South africa, the Philippines and The Netherlands. He is currently Visiting Professor, University of Twente, The Netherlands and Florida State University. A post president of AECT, be is the recipient of the International Division's Exemplary International Contribution Award.
