Science teacher beliefs and classroom practice related to constructivism and factors that may influence classroom practice
were examined in this cross-case study. Data from four science teachers in two schools included interviews, demographic questionnaire,
Classroom Learning Environment Survey (preferred/perceived), and classroom observations and documents. Using an inductive
analytic approach, results suggested that the teachers embraced constructivism, but classroom observations did not confirm
implementation of these beliefs for three of the four teachers. The most preferred constructivist components were personal
relevance and student negotiation; the most perceived component was critical voice. Shared control was the least preferred,
least perceived, and least observed constructivist component. School type, grade, student behavior/ability, curriculum/standardized
testing, and parental involvement may influence classroom practice. 相似文献

At a 5-day summer camp designed for middle-school girls (N = 50), fifth through ninth-grade students were able to identify
with individual scientists and learn more about the science field. Data from the girls’ journals, pictorial representations,
and field notes demonstrated that these young women related to scientists who actively engaged them in hands-on, problem-based
activities and had a sense of humor while doing so. Girls closely identified with science fields that offer an opportunity
for travel and for interaction with animals. In addition, it is evident that the girls’ personal and social interactions shaped
their perceptions of scientists and helped them internalize their experiences as members of a science community in relation

Ties between the lexicon and grammar: cross-sectional and longitudinal studies of bilingual toddlers
Studies using the English and Spanish MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories demonstrated that the grammatical abilities of 20-30-month-old bilingual children were related more strongly to same-language vocabulary development than to broader lexical-conceptual development or maturation. First, proportions of different word types in each language varied with same-language vocabulary size. Second, individual changes in predicate and closed class word proportion scores were linked to growth in same-language vocabulary but not to total conceptual vocabulary. Third, increases in English utterance length and English and Spanish sentence complexity were related to growth in same-language vocabulary but not to growth in conceptual vocabulary. Increases in Spanish utterance length were linked to growth in both Spanish vocabulary and conceptual vocabulary. Possible mechanisms underlying these patterns are considered. 相似文献

Most of today's students are skilled in instant messaging, Web browsing, online games, and blogs. These have become part of the social landscape and have changed how we learn and where we learn. The question becomes how to harness the attractiveness and ubiquity of electronic venues toward the goal of teaching neuroscience. At the Rice University Center for Technology in Teaching and Learning, a central focus is the creation of innovative materials that appeal to middle school students. A recent project was undertaken through a Science Education Drug Abuse Partnership Award (R25 DA15063) from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to inform adolescents about the neurobiology of substance abuse and the current research dealing with a class of drugs known as club drugs. Problem-based learning, multimedia pedagogy, and the National Science Content Standards were integrated to produce The Reconstructors, an episodic series available via the World Wide Web at http://reconstructors.rice.edu. A field test of students from five schools assessed the retention of content after "playing" The Reconstructors series titled Nothing to Rave About. Gain scores indicated that middle school students' knowledge about club drugs and the basic neuroscience concepts that explain their effects improved significantly. 相似文献

This prospective, longitudinal study examined associations between whether and when children first acquire a mobile phone and their adjustment measures, among low-income Latinx children. Children (N = 263; 55% female; baseline Mage = 9.5) and their parents were assessed annually for 5 years from 2012. Children first acquired a mobile phone at a mean (SD) age of 11.62 (1.41) years. Pre-registered multilevel models tested associations linking phone ownership, phone acquisition age, and the interaction between ownership and acquisition age to levels and changing trends of depressive symptoms, school grades, and reported and objectively assessed sleep. Results showed no statistically significant associations, controlling the False Discovery Rate. Findings suggest an absence of meaningful links from mobile phone ownership and acquisition age to child adjustment. 相似文献

Renewed interest in research on performance improvement provides an ideal opportunity to examine how much empirical work is actually published and to identify the focus of research in the field. This paper describes a study conducted to examine the empirical research on performance improvement. The study involved a content analysis of articles published in PIQ from 1997 through 2000. Results indicated that empirical research accounted for about one‐third of all articles published in PIQ.
