A critical comment on Umansky and Cohen's (1980) “race and sex differences on the mccarthy screening test”

Several reasoning errors and methodological flaws in Umansky and Cohen's investigation of race and sex bias in the McCarthy Screening Test were pointed out and discussed.     

Stability of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children For A Sample Of At-Risk Preschool Children

This study examined the stability of the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) for a sample of at-risk preschool children. Over a 9-month time interval, the stability coefficients (corrected for restriction in range) for the global scales of the K-ABC ranged from .78 to .88. The stability coefficients (corrected for restriction in range) for the K-ABC subtests ranged from .65 to .79. It was concluded that scores on the K-ABC for at-risk preschool children display adequate stability, but that the Simultaneous scale appears to be more amenable to change than either the Sequential or Achievement scales.     

Types of Functional Educational Planning Modes

Planning looks to the future. It can have several different intentions and frames of reference; (a) to pursue more economical ways and means to implement courses, activities, and jobs based on accepted purposes; (b) to seek ways to increase the efficiency of an entire educational system, including all of its parts (such as a curriculum, a school, a school system, or a state); and (c) to search for, and possibly create, a new and improved future set of realities and consequences. The first two approaches are basically concerned with increasing efficiency in reaching established goals. The third is holistic in intending to both improve current efficiency and help to create a better future. This article (a) identifies and defines these three major distinct (yet related) planning modes, and (b) discusses one educational research and development effort which intends to integrate them.     

Reliability of the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts for Hispanic and nonHispanic kindergarten pupils

The internal consistency reliability of the Boehm Test of Basic Concepts (BTBC) was examined for 40 Hispanic and 40 non Hispanic kindergarten pupils in the Southwest. Subscale and total scale reliabilities appeared to be comparable. This evidence supported the reliability of the BTBC for Hispanic and non Hispanic kindergarten pupils.     

Dimensions of problem behaviors of emotionally disturbed children as seen by their parents and teachers

Compared the factor structure of parents' and teachers' ratings of children's behavior problems. Data were analyzed for a heterogeneous group of 194 emotionally disturbed boys and girls aged 3–13 years. Three factors emerged based on parents' ratings, and highly similar factors were obtained from teachers' ratings. The factors closely resemble the dimensions isolated in numerous previous studies, such as Quay's Conduct Problem, Inadequacy-Immaturity, and Personality Problem factors. The importance of the findings is discussed, especially pertaining to the analysis of parents' ratings.
