MapReduce indexing strategies: Studying scalability and efficiency

In Information Retrieval (IR), the efficient indexing of terabyte-scale and larger corpora is still a difficult problem. MapReduce has been proposed as a framework for distributing data-intensive operations across multiple processing machines. In this work, we provide a detailed analysis of four MapReduce indexing strategies of varying complexity. Moreover, we evaluate these indexing strategies by implementing them in an existing IR framework, and performing experiments using the Hadoop MapReduce implementation, in combination with several large standard TREC test corpora. In particular, we examine the efficiency of the indexing strategies, and for the most efficient strategy, we examine how it scales with respect to corpus size, and processing power. Our results attest to both the importance of minimising data transfer between machines for IO intensive tasks like indexing, and the suitability of the per-posting list MapReduce indexing strategy, in particular for indexing at a terabyte-scale. Hence, we conclude that MapReduce is a suitable framework for the deployment of large-scale indexing.     

The "professional" work of experienced physical education teachers

This study investigates whether experienced physical education teachers perceive the same frustrations and negative orientations as beginning teachers. Furthermore, it considers if the professionalization-deprofessionalization tension is a useful theoretical framework for analyzing the perspectives of experienced physical educators. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 experienced physical education teachers. Data suggest that in many respects their working conditions and orientations are more supportive and positive than those reported for beginning physical educators. After presenting the teachers' perspectives in terms of their sense of commitment, competence, and power, it is concluded that the professional satisfaction of these experienced teachers can be instructive for improving the working conditions of all teachers.     

The influence of the document ranking in expert search

The retrieval effectiveness of the underlying document search component of an expert search engine can have an important impact on the effectiveness of the generated expert search results. In this large-scale study, we perform novel experiments in the context of the document search and expert search tasks of the TREC Enterprise track, to measure the influence that the performance of the document ranking has on the ranking of candidate experts. In particular, our experiments show that while the expert search system performance is related to the relevance of the retrieved documents, surprisingly, it is not always the case that increasing document search effectiveness causes an increase in expert search performance. Moreover, we simulate document rankings designed with expert search performance in mind and, through a failure analysis, show why even a perfect document ranking may not result in a perfect ranking of candidate experts.     

Examination of birthplace and birthdate in World Junior ice hockey players

The present study investigated birthdate (known as the Relative Age Effect; RAE) and birthplace as determinants of expertise in an international sample of elite ice hockey players. The sample included 566 World Junior (WJR) ice hockey players from four countries (Canada, n = 153; USA, n = 136; Sweden, n = 140; Finland, n = 137). Participants competed in the International Ice Hockey Federation World U20 Championship between 2001 and 2009. A series of Poisson regression models were conducted to examine the consistency of direct then interactive relationships between both birthdate and birthplace and WJR membership across the four countries (Canada, USA, Sweden, and Finland). Findings revealed a consistent RAE across the four countries for World Junior participation from 2000 to 2009. WJR players from the four countries were also less likely to be from major cities. In addition, there was no evidence in any of the four countries of an interaction between RAE and birthplace. Future research should explore the contextual and cultural factors that influence elite athlete development in smaller towns, cities and communities.     

Media systems and their effects on women's sport participation in Taiwan

Much of the research on teachers' work is informed by role theory that assumes teachers' identity is largely ascribed. When there are inconsistencies in teachers' and others' expectations for different occupational roles such as physical education teacher and sports coach, 'role conflict' is said to occur. This study sought to investigate if role conflict was a major concern for Australian physical education teacher/coaches. Findings, informed by case studies with five teacher/coaches, challenge the assumption that moving between professional responsibilities causes role conflict. Rather, in moving across contexts, the physical education teachers managed inconsistencies in ways that resulted in positive and rewarding work experiences.     

‘I could do with a pair of wings’: perspectives on physical activity,bodies and health from young Australian children

There is little research that reports children's perspectives on physical activity, bodies and health. This paper, drawn from a larger multi-method study on physical activity in the lives of seven- and eight-year-old Australian children, attempts to ‘give a voice’ to 13 children's views. Interviews focused on children's activity preferences and related decision making and motivations pertaining to these activities, as well as how they thought about the relationships between physical activity, health and their bodies. Data suggest some tensions surrounding the importance of fun for children alongside their awareness of ‘healthist’ discourses that require self-monitoring and improvement.
