Post-secondary educational institutions are characterized by their seemingly inherent resistance to the nontraditional. Understanding ways of thinking about the future, however, will help the educator who has nontraditional ideas to plan and implement these ideas more effectively. Recent Chinese migrant students from Taiwan studying science in two Australian secondary schools were found to explain the
meanings of selected science concept labels in English by translating from Chinese. The research strategy involved interviewing
the students concerning their recognition and comprehension of the science concept labels firstly in Chinese and then in English.
Mean recognition and comprehension scores were higher in Chinese than in English, with indications that Chinese language and
science knowledge learnt in Chinese deteriorated with increasing time of residence in Australia. Rudimentary signs of the
students being able to switch between Chinese and English knowledge bases in science were also found. Implications for teaching

ABSTRACT The contextual, purpose-driven challenges facing schools and school systems across the world call for creative and innovative responses to revitalize school practices. The process of revitalization will require new thinking, new mindsets within an adaptive school culture and new leadership roles (formal and informal). Often the perception of leadership held within a school is that it is the province of the principal; however, if we move from a top-down model of leadership we can ulitize the capacity of others within to lead the learning. To enable this to happen, teacher leaders need to work with agency and principals need to nurture and grow their formal and informal leadership roles within the school. For many teachers, the question is how they can establish and commit to leadership roles and responsibilities within the school community while remaining in a teaching position. This case study examined the practices of teachers as they experienced leadership across three cross-cultural contexts: Colombia, Canada and Australia. It presents exemplars of teacher leadership in action and provides images of teacher leadership as enacted in addition to an understanding of the factors that were important in supporting their leadership actions. 相似文献

The study of learning environments has developed into a productive field of research in science education. Initially, the
design and application of classroom perceptual measures of particular dimensions of science classrooms attracted much attention.
More recently, such instruments have been used alongside of qualitative techniques to provide a richer understanding of sub-environments.
We continue this trend in the present interpretive study by exploring the nature of multiple environments within a middle
school classroom from the different perspectives of teacher, student and participant observer. In particular, we examine the
activity settings of lectures and group work, as well as the issues of learning and assessment. We conclude by arguing that
