Much Catholic school and church rhetoric suggests that Catholic schools possess distinctive learning environments. Research
into this aspect of Catholic schooling has been hampered by the lack of an appropriate assessment instrument. By drawing on
contemporary church literature, the perceptions of personnel involved in Catholic education and existing classroom environment
questionnaires, a new instrument was developed to assess student perceptions of classroom psychosocial environment in Catholic
schools. The use of this instrument in 64 classrooms in Catholic and Government schools indicated significant differences
on some scales. The distinctive nature of Catholic schooling did not extend to all classroom environment dimensions deemed
important to Catholic education.

Bildungs- und Erziehungskonzepte, zum anderen die st?rkere Kooperation zwischen der Schule und der Kinder- und Jugendhilfe

In the latest in a series of articles on experimental courses at Kent State University, the authors study how students perceive such classes in terms of a liberal arts cultural education versus a values oriented education. The results determine that subject matter interest was the prime motivation for students to enroll in experimental classes. This study was designed to investigate the relationship between students' views of the nature of scientific knowledge and
their own learning of physics, and the evolution of this relationship over time. Twenty-three students enrolled in a physics
course that emphasised laboratory work and discussions about the nature of science. Over a 15-month period, an extensive data
base was established including student essays and interviews regarding their views of the nature of science and teaching and
learning of physics. As part of an extensive data generation, students read a book on the epistemology of physics, wrote reflective
essays, and subsequently discussed the epistemology of physics in class. Two intensive case studies are used to illustrate
our understanding of students' views over time. Changes in students' views concerning the nature of scientific knowledge and
of the science teaching and learning process, which were not always complementary, are described with the aid of a model.
The findings of this research have direct relevance to the planning and implementation of science courses in which the development

Many factors affect an undergraduate student's postbaccalaureate plans. Academic interests, career-related factors, finances, and various psychological and sociological factors all have been found to be related to interest in advanced education. Few studies, however, are gender-specific in examining the relation of parental educational attainment to their children's aspirations. Such data would be helpful in the attempts to understand the continued underrepresentation of women in most fields requiring advanced degrees. All seniors at a large Midwestern university with at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average planning to graduate in spring or summer of 1986 were sent questionnaires dealing with their postgraduation plans. Of these 1900 surveys, 791 (42%) were returned. Results reported here examine the relation of future educational plans to gender of student, educational level of parent, and field of study. In this paper we continue our search for a socially responsible science education by an examination of the trends in the Science,
Technology and Society movement. These trends reflect differing ideological perspectives and result in courses which serve
different ends. We identify two major flaws in the movement that inhibits the realization of a schooling in science dedicated
to democracy. We propose skills necessary for citizens to participate in debate over issues surrounding the impact of science
and technology on society and a teaching stategy to help develop them.

Assessment and outcomes measurement is receiving considerable attention in higher education nationwide. But what are colleges and universities doing and calling assessment? To answer these and other questions, a telephone survey was conducted with a sample of large, research universities. Responses to the survey are presented and discussed in this paper. Results indicated limited university involvement in activities commonly associated with the current assessment “movement,” i.e., measures of added value or student progress and growth. Instead, much of the reported activities are “traditional” testing and evaluation activities such as placement testing and student evaluation of instruction.
